Sling Ideas for Winchester 94 Carbine

My 11 year old son and I have been doing a lot of deer hunting lately.  The current gun of choice is the 94 carbine that I have.  Its simple, small, and the only centerfire I have without a scope, which is what I want him to learn on.  Right now I have a redneck rig of a sling (thin wide nylon strap) tied to the small of the stock and between the magazine tube and barrel.   It works!  However, I'm more sophisticated than that or at least I thought I was. 

 

Of course I can drill and top swivels into the gun, but its a beautiful 94 walnut stock.  Yes, guns are tools, but I also appreciate art when I see it.  

 

What are your ideas or experiences?

Why not install a saddle ring...http://www.tapaderaswinchesters.com/saddlerings.html...then you can simply hook a single point sling to it.

If that's not your thing then purchase a simple rifle sling you like tie off one end to the forward magazine tube with a piece of rawhide and do the same behind the receiver. I mention these because you've indicated misgivings about having a sling swivel stud installed on the rear stock.

A lever rifle shouldn't have a sling. It should be held in the ready position, or at least carried with one hand around the receiver at the balance point. Quick snap shots are what the lever carbine is all about, and a sling would only be a hindrance.

 

The same applies to a scope. Receiver sights are o.k.

Saddle ring might be a good idea and use my Magpul MS3.  Your other suggestion is what I am doing now, but with a thin nylon belt.
