Anyone else travel by air frequently?

Those "comfort animals" piss me off.

I see them EVERYWHERE on Campbell too, dependas walking around with little Terriers with some tacticool "service dog in training" patch.

I heard they started letting them on planes now...do they xray them?! Whats stopping Habib from shoving a pound of NSX down Fido's GI tract and using a percussion detonator he hid in his super fancy Oxford font pen?

Now I definitely not flying anymore. Gunmen I can deal with, getting blown up not so much

Everybody is in a hurry to go no where...I had a guy ask me on a plane in Vegas if I was and I quote "are you going to get up or what?" my official response...

"If I were to stand up, which I'm not...where the hell would I go once I stand up?"

I've been asked that too.  My response was... "and then what?"  Then I thought about it for a minute and said, "I bet you're not a very good pool player."  The confused look confirmed that.

And escalators. For crying out loud, if you're going down, gravity is doing all the work. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. Part of me wants to yell at these people, "This is why you are going to die 10-15 years before me, because you're so GD lazy you won't even walk downstairs when the stairs are MOVING FOR YOU!" But then I consider that this is why they are morbidly obese and look at people like me and wonder how we do it. Not being the laziest effing creatures on the planet is a start.

When I grow up, I want to be just like you. No joking. This whole thread everything you have said is so true. As for flying. No. Never gonna happen. We have friends trying to get us to go on a cruise too. NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. That's even worse.

I'm pretty sure it's a serious violation of ADA to deny a service animal. Comfort or therapy animals are are not held to the same level.

Retired now but flew multiple times a week for years.

The most surreal flights were the ones right after 911. My first post 911 flight, two weeks after, had 7 passengers! As soon as we leveled off a middle eastern looking fellow got up and was in the toilet forever! The six of us left in the cabin started making some serious eye contact!

Then after landing in New Orleans I went to check into a normally buzzing downtown hotel. I was the only one in the entire lobby and almost never found a checkin clerk! The whole surreal trip felt like an episode out of "The Twilight Zone"! : /

Safe travels!

I always find this viewpoint intriguing (seriously).  Personally, I can't imagine limiting myself to only places I can get to by car.  The world is a big place and has a lot to see/do.  I personally think that if more people would see more of the world they may have a different view on a lot of things.

A cruise is a great way to see multiple locations very cheaply in the grand scheme of things.  Don't get me wrong, if you are happy not going, I would say don't go.  But I have met very few people who once they went truly didn't like it.  Yes, you can have a bad vacation for various circumstances doing anything, but I believe people are missing out on some of the most amazing places in the world if you take a stance of never flying.

To each his own.  That's what makes the world go round  .

I agree with this. 100 percent.

I haven't flown in 10 years.  It's just become to much of a pain and these airlines nickel & dime you.  Look at Allegiant, you see a round trip to Florida for $125 but then you have to add take off fee, landing fee, baggage fee, and a seat fee (unless you let them assign you one) Add it all up and it's about $200-$250.

FWIW, the best flight I had was in my Air Force days... a trans-Atlantic flight on a KC-135.  Was really neat to see that glass pit (in-flight refueling)

I glad I don't have to anymore, been maybe 10 years since I last flew.  Though if something arises, would still get on one I reckon.

I never did like flying on the big planes, even before 9/11, all the total lack of control and regimentation and forced close association with other humanoids, etc. Fortunately no undue claustrophobia, though.

I was also in widdle planes 6 or 8 times a year for fifteen years or so and even though they of course weren't in my personal control, always felt the guys had a better chance getting it down in one piece if bad things happened, which a couple of times they did, and they did.

And yeah, I know the stats and odds, big planes are much safer, just the perception I admit.

This problem was created by the customers, not the airlines. People complain flights are too expensive, so airlines go ala cart to give more choice. Then people say the airlines are nickel and diming.

Cheap doesn't mean value. Too many people expect first class service on a cargo ticket.

Recently saw where a carrier was going to charge extra on all baggage because it was Christmas and customers carry gifts in their baggage. Wait just a second here if it were not Christmas and my 40 pound bag cost me 25.00 dollars to check why in the hell should the same 40 pound bag now cost 35.00 to check?

Yep from what I've seen, commercial airline customers in general have an unrealistic expectation of what it should cost them to fly from place to place.

I don't know what it said, but I don't see this happening. Every airline has rules for weight of baggage. Stay under it, your ok, go over, you will pay. I suspect it was more about people being overweight on their luggage and having to pay for the extra weight. Some airlines give you a pound or so of grace. Others give zero.

I can say unequivocally that people are ridiculous with carry ons. So if they want to crack down on that, I am ok with it.

Note that this acticle does not once mention overweight baggage....

Yep, that's crappy. Doesn't surprise me about Spirit, but Frontier is disappointing. What it doesn't say is anything about Frontiers different levels of tickets. You pay a little more and get a ticket that includes one bag. That probably remains the same, but I don't know for sure. I admit, I don't pay for luggage being a frequent flyer so I guess I am not as upset at some would be, but I would never fly Frontier again had I booked a flight before this and they changed the rules before I flew.

Nothing the airlines do surprises me anymore after using them at least a couple time yearly for the last 30 odd years. Simply can not wrap my head around last year after finding a flight from Knoxville to Milwaukee with a stop in O'Hare for 250.ish to which when I checked on flights going from Knoxville to O'Hare they were 350.ish.... Thus I booked the Knoxville to Milwaukee flight with carry-on only and simply never got on the 2nd flight...

That's quite common. Try flying from Nashville to Atlanta. It's way more expensive than a connecting. You have to be careful now not making a connection. They can prevent you from using the return or make you buy another return ticket.

That would likely be the last straw for me then...

Even rental cars can be a hoot.... I have found that I can keep a car for two weeks for less money than 2 one-way rentals between states....

Is there a way to search for flights with stops in a city that is your actual destination like you describe? For example, I buy a lot of flights to Baltimore on Southwest, and they're almost never cheap. I know Baltimore is a layover/stop for a lot of Southwest flights, but how would I perform that search?

There might be something more precise  but I generally just try different combos on Expedia and look for common flight numbers etc....

I'll fly anywhere. My monkey is afraid of heights. To me boats are a no no. Disease, deaths, flipping. Too many stories, too many times. Just not worth the risk. I'd rather fly. I'll just have to medicate him at some point to get him to fly instead.
