Carry gun while hunting

This may be a stupid question but is it legal to carry your handgun while deer hunting, assuming you have a carry permit of course. I tried to look back through the forum and find an answer on on TWRA's website but never could find what I was looking for. Any idea?

Not bow hunting!

I would think if you are aloud to hunt with a pistol in the state, you could carry with out a carry permit in gun season

I'm talking about if I go hunting with my high powered rifle, can I take my handgun along with me as well, not to be used to hunt with, just a carry gun?

You can carry a hand gun with you deer hunting if it is legal to hunt with. This means the gun has to fire centerfire cartridges, no rimfire, and the barrel has to be at least 4" long. Also you can only carry during gun season not bow or muzzleloader season.

I can, and do, carry my Kimber 1911 with me hunting but can't carry my SW 638.

You don't have to have a hcp to carry while hunting but you do have to have a hunting license.

I know a guy who carries a muzzle loading pistol during muzzle loading season. It may or may not be legal, but I can't see any decent warden giving you :D over it.

With the exception of "archery only" season, you can carry a handgun while hunting, but it must meet some specific requirements as to barrel length and ammunition type. If you hunt on any of Tennessee's WMA's (wildlife management areas) a whole new set of rules come into play. Tennessee's 2008/2009 Hunting and Trapping Guide contains some wonderful information reguarding handguns. It also states that HCP holders may not carry handguns under certain conditions while hunting...good reading material for us hunters with HCP's.

If remember correctly, you cannot carry on a WMA....was taking my boys small game hunting and was told by the TWRA agent that I spoke with a few days prior that I would have to either not bring my handgun or leave it locked in the vehicle....could be due to the fact that we were small game hunting during gun season for deer...not really sure. I think the WMA's are the exception to the rule though...I will do some more research and post back...

No carry on WMA's except on Authorized Hunts and during specific hours.....

Seen a game warden the other day. Had M-16 in his truck....darn squirrels are getting bad these days I guess!! Since gun season opened up, I carry my .357 mag along with my .308. I'm really wanting to take a deer with handgun, so I will have to show some restraint from the .308. Does this make sense?

I carry a sidearm while hunting. A few years ago I was hunting from a shooting house and killed a nice small 8 pointer. It dropped in it's tracks, so I unloaded my rifle and left it in the shooting house while I field dressed the deer. After field dressing the deer, I was dragging it back towards the shooting house, and a coyote ran withing 5 yards of me. It stopped, looking at me and the deer, then ran off. It didn't growl or act aggressive, but did make me think I was between him and a meal. I also purchased a muzzle loading pistol which I carry muzzleloading season.
