According to local scanner traffic a month or so ago they can. They were actively looking for this fella after an incident though. Picked up the traffic from start to end of the call. Not once did they say "we have the warrant signed".

I called 911 for assistance with a very elderly driver. He was driving like he was in Britian. They knew exactly where I was the whole time. The dispatcher kept telling me what roads I was coming up on to confirm our location. I don't know if this is the same as what you wanted to know?

That would be different than what he is talking about. When you make a call, the locations data is passed to 911 and they can do what is called a "rebid" of the location through the telephone system to get you latest coordinates based on what you phone has sent. This has been possible for a long time.

I think what he is referring to is unknown, and unsolicited tracking.

I wonder if theyre using the actual Harris StringRays or some wierd UHF scanner? Maybe the King Fisher.

It isnt something an ordinary schmuck can use, on active scanning mode it feigns as a cell tower forcing connections to it, then you need a platoon of Sigint, MISO, CA and intel weenies to discern what theyre listening for and ping a specific signal and geolocate it.

Wish I had more training on it, I am sure there is a way to overload it...

That's the e911 system, we actually pay for that service in all our cell plans.

I have heard of police being able to track an accident victim to their location in the country by using cell phones as long as the cell phone is turned on. It has been known to have save a few lives but I think it still borders on Invasion of Privacy or illegal with out a warrant.........jmho
