Local Guard Recruitment

I went to the local a few years back they were advertising for members in the local paper, half the reason I went was because they were offering a cpr course that night for anyone who showed- I was not impressed & apparently they weren’t either, they didn’t even bother to mail me the cpr cert card.

I was interested a couple of years ago, emailed them (3 times as I recall) and got no response. I was less than unimpressed. :)

As stated earlier the perceived old 'lard ass good old boy' group is mostly gone gone gone. Some of us outlasted them - THANK GOD... For the East TN Area go to this website http://tsg3.us/ - click on join us - click on contact 3rd regt hq - and fill out the form. Staff is at the Sutherland HQ every Wednesday morning from 0900 - 1200 if you want to stop by. - Go to the NG Bldg, closest entrance to West High School, one story building across the parking lot from the NG Bldg. Drills are the last Sat of the month except for Dec when the drill/X-Mas banquet is the 15th at 1800.

I spoke to a couple of the TSG at a gun show . They seemed like good people trying to do good for the state. The mission statement is ok but they need to get out of BDUs , its kinda like wearing a CCW badge. if you know what I mean.

Thank you, the folks manning the booth at the gun show are good people and work hard, on their own time and at no pay, to try to recruit folks. I wish that you would have asked them about why we wear BDU's/TDU's and not ACU's. They would have told you that the woodland camo BDU/TDU, they look basically the same except for the velcro on the TDU, are the uniforms currently authorized for us to wear by the Adjutant General of the State of Tennessee, http://www.tnmilitary.org/ He's the boss and we report to him just like the TN Army & Air National Guard do :D. If he says ACU's we'll buy and wear ACU's, if he says olive drab we'll buy and wear olive drab as it's his call. So the bottom line is we'll wear whatever the AG says to wear and right now its BDU's/TDU's.

FYI, for those in East TN, the 3rd REGT is heavily involved in supporting RAM (Remote Area Medical) missions here in East TN. And you talk about the joy of serving your fellow citizens. When you have hundreds show up for free medical care you really thank God that you are not in their shoes.

I wonder if employers would still honor the hire back law if they were to be called up?? I also wonder if any other state has someting similar to this. I might've been interested if my work schedule wasn't all over the place.

Other States do have SDF's: http://www.sgaus.org/ but not all SDF's are created equal. I.e. NY SDF is very active, others are not.

As far as hire back laws go, that's an issue I cannot answer and would be best for a recruiter to field.

However

Since the TNSG's commander-in-chief is the governor of the state and not the President of the United States, TNSG units can not be "federalized"---called into active duty national service as can the Tennessee National Guard.

TNSG units can not be mobilized and deployed anywhere outside the state of Tennessee.

As far as work schedule goes, we drill one Saturday a month and then a 3 day AT in Spring/Summer.

Anybody interested in what training is offered in TNSG check out:

State Guard completely reorganized a year or two ago and it is fully functional right now. The use of the U.S. Army uniform is because we are recognized by the Federal Government through the National Guard Bureau (NGB) and we are part of the State Military Department. The National Guard in Tennessee is directed by the Governor (through the AG) to work with us and we have an good ongoing working relationship. We are considered part of the Statewide Joint Forces Staff. The only patch on the uniform that is bright is the TN Flag. Everything else is subdued. Beret flash is Red vs Blue for NG.

The Colonel Hofman mentioned as Commandant, TNSG Academy, on site is me. Anybody on the forum with questions about TNSG feel free to email me at wjh2657@walthofman.com.

For the baggy pants crowd. Fort Benning 1961 and Fort Lee 1962. Air Delivery( 1962-63), MACV Marine Advisory Unit (1963-1966), and 1st ANGLICO (attached to 2nd ARVN Rangers 1971)
