Help me decide between the Canik TP9sa and the TP9v2

I handled the Canik TP9sa at the NRA show back in March and loved it.  Reviews of the TP9sa are very positive. The Glock-type trigger is 4.5 lbs and short. It was the best trigger pull I felt at the entire show and I spent two days there handling guns. Now I'm trying to decide whether to get it or the new TP9v2. They are almost identical except...

  • TP9sa is single action. The decocker completely inactivates the trigger. It can be recocked by moving the slide only 1/4 inch. The decocker requires 10lbs of pressure to activate so the risk of inadvertent activation is low. There is a risk of forgetting to recock it but it has a red striker indicator to let you visually see if it is cocked. The downside is that once it is cocked, it has only the Glock-type trigger safety and a short pull 4.5lb trigger. The risk of AD while reholstering is greater than with the TP9v2.
  • TP9v2 is SA/DA. The decocker switches it to DA. It can be recocked by moving the slide 1/4 inch and requires 10lbs to activate. It's also 1/2 inch shorter, but that's not a factor for me because it is still a full-sized gun.

Either gun would not be my EDC, but I would carry it OWB in the winter under a jacket or around the farm. Finding a holster is not an issue since I make my own.

My cousin bought both. He opted for the second version. I have shot them and find that they are very pleasant to handle, and for the money you cant beat it.

I hear lots of talk about issues with reholstering. How often to people do that? Do they just blindly jam the thing in the holster?

The gun goes in the holster, very carefully, in the morning. It slides in under less than its own weight until it hits the retention. After checking the trigger/safety (again), it gets pushed the rest of the way. I fail to see how a reholstering discharge is such a significant problem.

TP9sa, because 10 lbs is stupid.

I had a TP9sa, loved it... but car repairs required it to leave. I would get another in a heartbeat.

If you fire the gun reholstering, you're finger is probably not in the correct spot to begin with haha.

The paddle holster that comes with those guns is rock solid though! Once it's clamped on, you about have to take your pants off just to remove the holster. No one would stand a chance of taking the gun off of you.

I would be happy with either or both. Train with what you carry, learn it and carry safely!

My thoughts on the matter too...ieither are really decent guns that are very reliable as well as being affordable.

TP9sa for me. I got one of the FDE models and love it. I think I actually shoot it better than my Glock 19.

And I agree with Steelharp. Why change what already works for me.
