Another snake ID thread

I have lived here on and off since I was six. I thought I had seen everything there is to see in those 40 years but this one I have never seen. I am assume it is some sort of Corn snake or Rat snake or a hybrid but not 100% positive. I know it is not a copperhead or any other venomous snake. I have never seen a snake like this before. It is almost like a cross between FDE and burnt bronze, really cool.

 

You can see some very, very light patterning. It is not in the process of a molt so that is not the cause for the muted stripes. I do believe the dark spots are caused from moisture and not an actual pattern.

Looks more like some kind of water snake to me. Look at this page. A couple of those look really close.

HOOOOOOLLDDDDD ON A MINUTE.....the dekays snake description linked here indicates that when the snake is scared it "secretes a foul smelling substance from its anal gland".......oddly enough I do that too. :)

Better be sure its not a copper head...not all of them have the diamond pattern that everybody is used to seeing.

I thought it was Neal..lol... screamed at him to not touch it.. it just had been run over by our neighbor on the road. What threw me off are the scales..

At first glance it looks like some type of water snake, but it doesn't match one species exactly.

Non venomous--round eye pupils.   I'll go with a corn snake.  They have sometimes have muted coloring.

If it's dead, it looks like one of those Anothervoteforademcandidate rattler.

The scales look sharply keeled, which you don't see in corn and rat snakes.

Possibly a Northern Water Snake. It is highly variable in its pattern, both on its dorsal and ventral surfaces. It can vary from a very distinct pattern to vague banding that looks like almost a solid color. Thus an individual specimen may not match the picture shown in guides. It also has keeled scales.

Dead snake is a good snake.

The plethora of snakes in North America have helped prevent plague and famine throughout history. Take away the snakes and watch the rodent population explode.

Yep, I love my black racers and garter snakes and do my best not to run them over with the mower. Only snakes I'll kill on sight (if in my yard) are rattlers, copperheads and coral snakes, because of the kids and dogs. I helped my mom slay about a dozen Pygmy rattlers this year on her property when they came out of hibernation. Just don't want them around the kids.

haven't seen many snakes in the last 2 years like I have in the past. Not even many road kill snakes, wonder if their population is down for some reason?

Maybe the indiscriminate killing by humans?  At the very least it could explain less snakes seen around populated areas.
