Taxidermist Recomendations?

Recommended Posts

My TX hog hunt was a bust due to the CRAZY flooding from the hurricane.... But a buck walked out and as a result had a bad day.

This was a great trip with my Dad, and want to do a European mount of it for him. Anyone know of a decent taxidermist near Nashville that has beetles?

I thought of doing the boiling thing, but have read you should first practice on one that you don't car about because you can ruin the rack by discoloration...

Thoughts?

It's a cinch to do yourself.
You can get 95% of the tissue off the skull with a scalpel & a lot of the brain out with a wire hook.
Once you've got everything possible toss it in a pot big enough to cover the entire skull but make sure the antlers stay out of the liquid.
Use 1 cup of borax to 3 gallons of water.
Boil for an hour & check it. Any loose tissue will come away easily with a scrubbing brush. Boil for longer if necessary.
Let it air dry for at least a week & then you're ready for peroxide.

If you are worried about discoloring the antlers, wrap them in saran wrap then aluminum foil from the base for the first 6" or so.  That will help protect them from splatters.

Another tip.  Don't use your wife good pot to boil your deer.  They don't like that.

Check out your local goodwill.  I have found some great pots really cheap there.
