How opinion polls really work

I find it helpful to replace "opinion polls show" with "Americans that still have landlines that answer unsolicited phone calls from numbers they don't recognize think."

It really helps put it all into perspective.

Actually, they call cell phones now. My wife did a political survey just last week that came in on her cell phone.

I couldn't care less what opinion polls show. Mob rule is among the worst forms of government, and when you legislate based on opinion polls that is exactly what you are promoting. Short of no system at all, I prefer a system where individual rights are sacrosanct. Unfortunately, in our system votes in Congress are easily bought since the only thing that concern our representatives is the next election cycle.

My wife got a call the other day on her cell phone.

They informed her it was a political poll but when she said she was a republican they didn't want to ask her any questions.  Said it was a poll for Democrats.

I bet I can guess that they got the results they wanted.

Basically same thing happening at our place. Land and cell lines have been getting a few of these intrusive calls.

But on the up side...I spent a good hour watching all the BBC clips. And had a great time.

Bingo.  The exact balance between the two is still in debate, but no legitimate polling group relies on land lines alone anymore.

I know that the campaigns (Sanders & Clinton) are paying consulting groups for polling already, so it might have been one of those.  If that's the case, they are probably looking at some initial numbers within the Super Tuesday states so they can make the decision about which ones to try and be competitive in, and the accompanying media & staff budget.  I know the primary seems like forever away, but for the ones who have to allocate funding to run operations for it, that time is already here.
