The 99 was my first non 22 to shoot. It was my grandfather's gun. I used to sit on our barn and shoot coyotes that strayed on the farm. It was the first rifle I killed a deer with. My uncle currently has it and I am hoping that I will get it, like you I would like to get it so I can enjoy it with him. My uncle said that was his grandfather's gun. If I get it that means 4 generations will enjoy it. Hopefully one of my kids will want it and keep this in the family. Great gun awesome story, glad you can enjoy it with your dad.

Congratulations! A fine deer rifle with history.

As for cleaning, I use a non metallic rod and gently go at it from the bore end. They really don't require a bore cleaning every time you shoot them.

I've probably shown you the one my father restocked and gave me for my birthday a couple of years ago. If not, here it is.

It isn't a collector gun, as there's little original about it, but it's pretty cool anyway. I've killed two deer with three shots with it so far. The third shot later proved unnessasary.

Thank you!

And no you haven't showed me, but sure glad you did. That is very nice! Especially nice getting it for your birthday huh?

Awesome story. I myself have a few guns that were my grandfathers that I feel the same way about...somebody could offer me a lot of money for them and I would never in a million years let them go. Hold on to it and keep passing it down

Same here! I also have another lever action, a Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30. Unfortunately it wasn't handed to me by my Pappaw, it was only after he passed away that I received it. Would have much rather him given it to me in person like my Dad was able to do with this Savage. But I cherish it nonetheless for memories of him.

Greg, are you still able to hunt easily with the irons? I know it's probably harder to see in the woods with irons than when I was younger.

Love the picture by the way!

A tang sight helps greatly. Are you hinting that I'm old?

Oh Heavens no! Just the gun! By the way, I was cracking up when I read your response!

I love using irons sights at the range. But in the woods, it sure is nice to have a little magnification. Speaking of, I need to get a scope for my muzzle loader too or I will be using irons on it as well too.
