? for you guys that use motor oil for gun lube

I have never used the Motor oil but like the Lucas Red N Tacky #2. I have used it on the AK and 1911 for a couple years. Started using the Lucas gun lube they make now, good stuff. Thinner than the RedNtacky but still sticks to everything really well.

Depends on temperature. Too thick and it can cause the firearm to malfunction.

The temperature must be quite cold.

Learned this in the military, first hand experience.

Depends on the gun. Different guns require different types of lube and by different types I mean oil or grease. I prefer to use grease on everything I can for several reasons. First it stays where you put it so you do not have a round oil spot in your safe from oil that runs down the gun. Second dirt and crud will sit on top of grease rather than get mixed in with it like oil. But there are some down sides to using grease. First grease does not help keep the crude suspended like oil can so it can allow a gun to malfunction sooner compared to oil when the gun is getting really dirty. But even so I use grease on everything then have a small can of WD-40 to keep the crude moving. This helps remedy a malfunction as well as prevent one if the gun is starting to become sluggish.

For when I MUST use oil I use a 50/50 mix of 30 weight synthetic and automatic transmission fluid. The transmission fluid has a lot of detergents in it so it helps keep the crude from thickening and causing malfunctions. And if I want a lube that really cuts the crude I will add 10% of injector cleaner into the 50/50 mix. I ran a 50/50/10 mix in a silenced 22 rifle and it would go thousands of rounds between cleanings as long as I used the mixture. If I did not the gun would start to malfunction at ~500 rounds so I know it does work well but I still prefer grease over oil for 99% of my guns.

How about Astro Glide?

Will not work for resizing lube.

Additionally, you DO NOT want to use resizing lube in place of the astroglide.

You can learn a lot in the TGO chatroom....

motor oil can affect a small number of plastics.  I have never had it hurt anything on a gun, but I have had it damage a knife before.

The weights have marginal effect in this application.

I actually do use my resizing lube on some of my guns.   Its worked pretty well for me -- using the hornady tub of grease stuff. Its thin, its cheap, and its lubeish.   YMMV.

I use the Rotella synthetic BLUE jug. Gotta watch out for those friction modifiers with a wet clutch and all....No wait. Sorry, I thought I was on the GL1800 website for a minture...LOL!!!

I just couldn't resist. HA!

Axle grease and transmission fluid "stink".  I also agree, unless you are operating in 350 degree temperatures, the 2nd number of the oil weight doesn't mater.  So just decide 0W, 5W, 10W, 30W etc.  Remember the first number I believe is the viscosity at laboratory settings of 70 degree F.   The 2nd number is the viscosity at 350F.

And to Ron's point, don't you need some friction fighting ingredients?  No need for KYJ in this household yet

I wonder if bacon grease is a good alternative?

i use motor oil that is left over from my oil changes.  it is tractor, car, motorcycle oil all different weights mix.   some times i add transmission fluid to the mix.  i use axle/wheel bearing grease also.   for me it works just as good as the high dollar stuff you buy.  i have gotten named brand gun oils/greases as gifts during rifle/pistol matches.  i have used them and i can not tell any different between them and motor oil except the price per ounce.  but for cleaning i am a #9 man except when i mix up a batch of ed's red.
