We had a bear in my backyard a few years ago..  do not know what kind.. black bear maybe. small and looked pretty sad.. I think it was the year we had some drought conditions ..

It had to be a black bear. It's the only kind here. They do rarely come in other colors, but they're still called "black bears".

A little Google search will reveal many sightings in TN, the gov sure goes out of the way to deny they are actually here. I would think it's odd except, it is the government.

 

 The TWRA has for years denied any cougars ( whatever name you choose ), in TN, for some reason. Not like they were covering

a UFO landing. It's been know for years that they are migrating East.

Okay. So the short answer is -- no, no credible documentation of a black cougar in South America either.

 

Indeed, he says that a black cougar is "...little short of impossible - for two extremely good, fundamental reasons", then goes on to support that with both empirical and genetic reasons. Good enough for me.

If you want to postulate a hitherto unknown species of cougar sized black cat running around the country,  I posit my white grizzly sighting as having equal validity. :)

Can you kill one in self defense?  A few friends want to go camping before it gets too cold, and at first I figured the worst we will have to deal with is maybe a coyote or if we are truly unlucky a brown bear. We were going to maybe take two hand guns and a mag or two. But now, not so sure of the ramifications on protecting yourself from one.

On that note, this "motive" of self protection against threatened and endangered animals is the excuse bubba continually uses to justify shooting rare animals. The Florida panther is extremely endangered, yet some idiot put a crossbow bolt through one's skull last year, likely using the "it's coming right at us" excuse, when the animal likely posed no danger. Not saying it's impossible, but find me the last reported case of a large cat in the wild attacking a person in the eastern United States. I don't buy it when some trigger happy idiot makes the claim it was self defense.

I saw one in Gibson County (West TN just north of Jackson) in the fall of 1992.  It was crossing the road just down from my house.  The power and grace was breathtaking.  I can definitely see how someone would be frightened enough to shoot one if they encountered it in the wild.  However, from all reports they shy away from people, so I doubt seriously they are much of a threat.
