Depends on the country where it was made and if someone has "modified" it. There were very few SKS' which came with detachable magazines from the factory. If it has been modified to just use magazines, be ready for some problems. They tend not to do well with the aftermarket mags.

They have skyrocketed in price lately, but a good condition stock Yugo is worth around $250 (unless you go to a gunshow and there someone would probably be asking $3000 because of all this price gouging :D)

Does it still have the original stock? Can you get a picture? What kind of bayonet does it have?

Despite the rise in their prices lately, I wouldnt want to offer much over $200 for it myself.

Personally, at that price range, I'd steer him toward a Saiga.

I would gladly pay $250 for a nice SKS, Yugo or Chinese, either one. The comments on the hi cap mags are correct. My experience is that even the "best" one, the Tapco 20 rounder, is not always reliable. Stick with the original 10 round integral magazine, and you will be good to go with an excellent rifle.

Didn't SOG import some Norinco's that used AK Mags? I think it was the Paratrooper Model. They also had short 16" barrels. You see them around from time to time. I understood them to be of pretty good quality.:stir:

In the early 1970's China modified a number of SKS's to use an AK magazine. The original modified guns run fine, the later, aftermarket guns have issues. Very few of the original Chinese guns were imported, but many were retrofitted with a less than stellar kit by Century Arms and Southern Ohio Guns (SOG). Those guns are to be avoided as the mag adaptors were hit and miss for functionality.

Prices on SKS have been going up lately. I've always considered them an under-value in the market place. I believe the original Russian, Chinese and Romanian guns are far undervalued and the market seems to be finally catching up to me (dang, I need to buy some more).

Myself, I find the orignal 10 round integral mags quite adequate. But then, I'm an old fart that doesn't appreciate the mag-burn.

A guy at work bought a Yugo a couple of weeks back and has recently purchased three of the hi-cap mags. I cautioned against spending to much money on them. I mentioned the fact that the original 10 round fixed worked wonderful. He pissed his money a way. They don't work well at all.

I'm like you just another old fart. Why fix something that ain't broke in the first place.

any of the high cap mags besides Tapco's are junk IMO

+1 , but in the early 90s I bought 2 30 round metal mags and have never had problems with them, but if put beside some friends newer metal mags they look much better made, I think they where made by western.

Sometimes the Tapco 20 round mags don't work either. They wouldn't work in my Norinco SKS with a Tapco stock. And they are said to be the best! I just stick with the reliable original equipment 10 rounder.

Yes I never have used anything but the original fixed magazines myself for some reason I hate polymer mags.
