Offset sight for AR

I watched Jerry Miculeck shooting an AR on Tv the other night. It was a full length rifle like mine. It had a full size scope as well. BUT, he was shooting it with the rifle turned on his shoulder 45 degrees counter clockwise. He had a small holo sight mounted on a 45 degree offset mount.

I am color blind, and can't see a holo sight very well, but I want one for low light use.

Who's got what I need, and how much. Hero Gear? I know somebody knows what I'm talking about.

Also, Wouldn't it be a bitch to zero in? Having to bench it on an angle. I suppose a small spirit level would really help huh?

I cant answer your questions, but can offer a couple of ideas.

You could always mount a 45degree angled rail to the flattop to make the sight level when the rifle is tilted 45 degrees.

Be sure and view your reddot options at full illumination to fairly evaluate them re your vision problem. Are you across-the-sprectrum color blind or can you choose a color that is easier for you to see (red v green v ?)?

Clinically it's called Red/Green color blind.

I can see colors, But according to the rest of the world, not all of them. Some light reds are green, I can't tell blue from purple. That sort of thing. God gives where natural selection takes away though. I can see in low light better than anyone I know, so I guess it evens out.

It's no wonder I got rejected from the bomb squad huh? I SAID CUT THE BLUE WIRE!!!!!!!!!!!:D

You could always mount a 45degree angled rail to the flattop

YEAH!!! That's what I want to do, where {locally} can you get such?

Also Would love some experienced opinions on exactly how to mount it.

Lets you put rails pretty much wherever you want. Between the handguard and the rails, though, you are looking to spend a bit.

That's cool, but not what I was talking about at all.

I know it's hard to see, but he has a 45 degree mount UNDER his main scope, which puts the holo sight offset to the right of the main scope. I suck at explaining things.

I have seen them before but too me it sounds kinda like chrome on a racecar, it wont make it go any faster... :D

Well, it let's you have a quick sight for up close or for fast shots, that a magnified objective can't give.

Jerry is a gamer. The off-set reflex optic is pretty common among the gaming circles. It allows the operator to transition from a magnified optic to a reflex optic by simply adjusting his cheek weld. Some of the industry professionals (combat guys, not gamers) over on M4C have said they could see marginal benefits for it on a combat carbine, but I can't recall reading where any of them said they were running a trick setup like that on a fighting gun.

Several manufacturers make pic-rail adapters that allow you to get the 45-degree offset needed to run an Aimpoint T1, Doctor, etc in that fashion. I'd have to Google it to find more info, but you could do the same so I'll just leave it at that. :D

:DIf Jerry is a gamer, I wonder what he could do if was "playing for keeps"?:D

It's scary that a man can shoot like that.:D

Once upon a time, in my wildest dreams...

This may sound retarded, but I even thought of using two of those little offset mounts, turning them to the left, mounting my scope THERE, then buying a rear sight AND a holo. I've seen 1x magnification optics that use irons together. It would look weird, but I like irons better than scopes, but past 100 yards:rolleyes:.

Okay, let me start all over. I have a Bushmaster 20 inch barrel, A3. The carry handle removed and a 3-9x40 leapers on top of a 3/4" riser. I would LIKE to have a set up that would let me shoot a scope and a non-magnification sight, without using a quick detach set up. I'm not an AR person, but everybody needs one, and mine needs a little improvement.

I know a bunch of you guys are coo-coo for coco-puffs in the AR dept. I'll listen;)

Whoops, my fault.

In other news, that arrangement is exceptionally trippy. Though, from those pictures, as well as the JP handguard, it seems the concept is catching on.

Curious, why not just mount something like this that can be used along with a "normally" mounted optic?

That way all sighting is done along the same plane and you don't have to fiddle with offset stuff?

Because I can't use an iron sight THROUGH a magnified scope. That defeats my purpose.

I mocked it up setting the gun in the cradle, and string tied the scope on a 45 degree angle. It was a perfect set up in my minds eye. It's dumb as hell in real life. I'd love to come up with something, and I'll keep tinkering with it, but I'll probably get mad here in a little while and put the AR back in it's case and shove it in the back of the closet where I had damn thing.

My bad, Dude. I missed the part about magnified optics (that whole reading comprehension thing). :stir:

WTF!!! Why didn't I think of that, it's so simple!!!

Going out to my shop tonight, gonna blow the dust off my mill and lathe, and I'll have me one of those bastards before the weekend is out.

Why is it, the simple{ie best} solution stares you in the face and you still miss it?!?!?!?

Oh well, the blind squirrel found a nut:cool:
