Just wondering if anyone would know of a good place to get ammo for an M48 Mauser our K31 Swiss. Just picked up one of each. Everyone I've talked to says ammo for these are scarce. Also, what would be a good brand ammo?

Now that I look, it would seem there's not much GP11 on the market anymore, which I find odd.  It's really good stuff.  Guess I'll be more protective of what I've got.  ;)  Looks to be similar for the surplus 8mm... not much out there.  Though honestly, I doubt you're going to want to run lots of rounds through the M48.  Its fun to shoot, but I'm typically done after about 10.

In the absence of that, you're left with the typical PPU, S&B, Wolf, and various hunting style offerings in either caliber.

The PPU stuff is good, most any of it is fine.  Mostly it depends on the condition of the rifle.  My K31 is really nice and I'd be somewhat hesitant to run nasty ammo through it, but I don't think they make anything particularly bad in 7.5 Swiss.  The Wolf in 7.5 Swiss is supposed to be a higher grade than the bulk stuff for AK's and such.  GP11 is (reported to be) match grade and I know the rifle is more accurate than I am.

On the other hand, my M48 is less than pristine so I don't mind running the corrosive milsurp stuff.   You'll just have to find what you can and see what the rifles like.

Gundeals.com is your friend

Buy the swiss gp11. It runs around 50 cents a round. Is considered match ammo

As far as 8mm goes - plenty of surplus floating around out there or buy new. I will have some turkish 8mm available in November

Wolf Gold is most likely PPU (Priv Partisan) in different packaging. I've bought both from Aim and/or Sportsman's Guide, in a variety of calibers, including Swiss. Good ammo, no complaints.

GP11 for surplus is great.

I have measured bullet concentricity and weighed powder and cases. Pretty amazing for the time and being surplus. But then again, they make some amazing watches. :)

Resize 30/06 brass in a 8mm Mauser die, trim them to the correct length, and load them yourself. Several manufactures make both hunting and target bullets for 8mm.

I won't be at the show. I'm working on the hydraulics on my Allis Chalmers and putting the finishing touches on my custom ceramic grill table.
