I am considering getting a big bore upper. Does anybody here have any experience with either of these two? What are the pros and cons of both.

Thanks.

I know some folks like them, but to me they are in the .50 DE category. More novelty than practical.

I would go with a 6.8 SPC. It can do all the same stuff the other two can do with better range and a whole lot less recoil. On the 6.8 forums guys are using them a lot for hogs and elk in addition to regular CPX2 game. Since they now have varmint loads (80g and 90g) it will continue to make the .223 irrelevant.

Rightwinger has some experience with both IIRC. Maybe he will check in.

Are you considering .450 Bushmaster as well?

I have no experience with any of them (other than fondling them at one time or another), but I always heard that .458 Socom was the best choice if you intend to reload.

Kahrman, what would you like to know??? hahahah

Own a 458 SOCOM made by the designer himself, Marty Ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu in Texas. He has licensed the design to one company, Rock River Arms for mass production. The best thing about the Socom in my opinion is the selection of bullets available for it. Anything in .458 from 250 grains to monster 500 grain bullets in solid, hollow point and they have even loaded some smaller bullets in 458 sabots. 458 uppers pin right on any standard 5.56/.223 lower and uses the same magazines only the rounds single stack.

I'll be using mine Saturday. Triple Digit Ride has shot it. Give me a holler when you want to test drive it as well. Lots of info over on 458socomforums.com

Here is a comparison pic of .223 and the .458. Not my rifle but similar

Yes, I did, and that thing was awesome. Seeing that .458 slice through both sides of a steel tank like hot butter was was simply amazing. Built on an AR platform, it's as close to perfect as perfect can get.

I have no other big bore experience for a comparison, so I can't help you that much. I would take Rightwinger up on the offer to take his .458 for a test drive. You won't regret it.

Wing, that is freakin' awesome! Are you hunting with it? I did see a fella shoot a whitetail with one on the outdoor channel the other night. Seems to be plenty for doing so. IIRC, it's basically an adaptation of the .45-70 govt??

Does the "come shoot" offer go for liberal bass-turds like me?:D:tough::D

Liberals only get to watch from the business end Bronker!

Anyone who is seriously even thinking about going big bore, I will get with and let them shoot this thing. Its to much fun not to share and I like introducing folks to it.

You probably have to buy the biscuits or lunch though!

and yes, its packed up right now and sitting next to the dresser with the other bags to load up in the morning. I"m leaving for hunting as soon as I can get off work tomorrow afternoon. I hope to deliver some 300 grain goodness Saturday morning.

RW, absolutely post here if you get a deer with that thing!:D

I'm considering the 458 seriously as my next firearm. Especially with the ease of adaptability to the 5.56 lower, and the mag-sharing.

When I get closer to purchase, I absolutely will take you up on your offer!:tough:

And yes, I'd be honored to buy lunch, my friend! :tough:
