Question: Cabelas in Georgia and the law.

I brought my revolver, 640 Smith, into Cabelas to try the fit on some holsters for concealed carry. I went to the check in desk where they opened my case, checked my revolver, and placed a trigger lock and chamber flag into it. Then an employee carried it for me (I wasn't allowed to touch it) back to the holsters. We selected a couple and the employee carried the pistol behind the counter, removed all the locks, tried it for fit, showed it to me ('I can't allow you to touch it') and then locked it back up. I asked why they went through all of this when other stores don't and I got a multitude of answers: its the FFL, the ATF, GA gun laws, those other stores are doing something illegal, etc.

My question is: Is there a law on the books against this or is it a company policy.

Also, I ordered another holster from Simply Rugged. :)

Definitely no Georgia laws; wonder if it was an employee trying to fill the air (i.e., pulling an explanation out of their butt).  They should just be instructed to say it is company policy.  How hard can that be?

Or an even better answer...that they simply do not know and are just doing as told. I'd at least respect that answer.

Yep Company policy. Some outdoor or outdoor equipment stores that have a firearms dept. will have someone walk you outside with a new gun purchase. The clerk carries the gun out the door, then gives it to you so you can leave with it. Some clerks think that's the law, some just use that excuse to placate you. Bottom line they don't want a public debate or question and answer session about it.

But it's so much more fun to play "retail clerk lawyer"!

I hardly ever correct folks anymore in situations like that.  The only thing more frustrating than somebody spreading fake or inaccurate legal info is the misinformed employee who is so convinced he's correct that he'll argue about it.

company policy.   What they do for concealed carry: nothing, you can have it as-is.  But if you are going to take it out and wave it around inside the store, they go into full paranoid mode because someone, at some point, fired their "unloaded" gun in a store or at a gun show etc.   Its overkill, but I have experienced the same at several stores.  Sportsman's warehouse has you unload it while its muzzle is stuck into some weird "bullet catching device".  Academy walks it back for you.   Etc.   Its just legal safety... if you shoot someone while waving your carry piece around checking out holsters,  the store is liable if they don't have a "don't do that" policy on the books.   IMHO the shooter should pay the store for damages and any victims and everything else when this happens, but somehow the store is considered at fault with our broken legal system.   Buying a gun is usually not as weird as pulling one out in-store for service/fitting/etc.

Also I'm not bashing cabelas. I like there selection in reloading stuff. I was just curious on the law claim. Sportsmans and GT distributors are both perfectly happy once you show that the gun is unloaded. It just amazed me that Cabelas wasn't the same.
