What gun shoots 7.92x42mm?

A friend told me he had some old ammo that I might be interested in. He wasn't exactly sure of what it was. Thinking it was probably 7.62 x 39, I went over to his place to check it out. At first glance, I thought it was 30-06. But the head stame revealed it was 7.92 x 42mm. It's brass cased and quite old.

What gun shoots this kind of ammo? Looks like a sniper rifle round to me. I'm just curious about it. There were no markings on the boxes. Looked like he had around 120 rounds.

Mac's probably right on this one. If it looks like an '06" at a glance it's probably 8mm Mauser. Edited by Caster

I think that stuff is 7.92 Mauser ammo made in Canada in 1942 to be dropped to allies in the European and Asian theaters.  Pictures?

edit:  here's a link - see post 12.

This guy knows a LOT of stuff!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm guessing Mac is correct.

7.62X42 perhaps?

There's a 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser), and a 7.92x33 which was designed for submachine guns.

I'm not aware of, nor can I find any information on a 7.92x42.

Can you get a pic of the headstamp?

Gregintenn, I don't have any of the ammo to take a pic. But, I did look at the head stamp under magnification and it's 7.92, not 7.62. It's a large round, with a spire point, FMJ, bullet.

Sorry, I looked at it in his driveway and left. I didn't take a pic. What you say may very well be what it is.

Based on this, I agree with Mac... most likely 8mm mauser.  30 seconds with a caliper can verify that.
