Repairing driveway cracks

I need some advice on how to repair some cracks in my driveway. It's not blacktop or cement. It's a highway-type material with small gravel held together with something. The cracks have grass growing through them, so I figure if I don't fix it, it will eventually get worse.

From what I've learned so far, I can either brush some type type of filler over it or I can put a rope-like tar into the crack and melt it with a torch. The latter sounds like a more permanent fix, but I'd like to see what others think.

First I have to get rid of the grass in the cracks. I've tried pulling it out with pliers. That works, but it's going to take at least 4 hours to do that. Any suggestions on how to speed up that process... maybe burn it off with the torch? I'll have to buy a torch, but compared to paying someone to seal the driveway, it's a minor expense.

I have a 150 yard long driveway. I'd guess there is between 300-500 linear feet of 1/4 to 1/2 wide cracks to be filled, plus some areas where the driveway is crumbly that will have to be sealed with the brush-on approach.

Is there some other approach I should consider? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Use a good herbicide and kill the grass, then do the torch and rope style tar to seal it. The material in your driveway is called chip and seal or chipseal, lots of county road departments used to use it on backroads.
