This might explain:

http://www.aguilaammo.com/index.php/about/

Founded in 1961, Aguila Ammunition is dedicated to the development and manufacturing of self-defense, recreational, hunting, law enforcement, and military ammunition. Aguila offers a large line of products and is one of the largest Rimfire manufacturers in the world.

Aguila Ammunition is manufactured in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico by Industrias Tecnos, S.A. de C.V. The Tecnos factory has resided on the same 120 acres for over 50 years. In 2011, Tecnos partnered with Texas Armament & Technology (Tx-AT) to begin a facility-wide MODOP or Modernization and Optimization project that would truly redefine ammunition production and reliability. Modernized equipment and lean production processes such as SMED or Single Minute Exchange of Dies, are just two examples of how Aguila is bringing you the ammunition quality you deserve.

Our strict quality-assurance program allows us to guarantee reliability and performance to you, our customers. It all starts with a careful process of sourcing raw materials. In order to produce the best, you must start with the best. Only choice materials enter the factory, this ensures only choice products leave it. At the other end of the program is the ballistic evaluations testing of our ammunition’s velocity, pressure, accuracy, and performance. Hundreds of primary, secondary, and tertiary variables are considered when producing ammunition. Our Rimfire .22 is manufactured using world renowned, ELEY technology. Key elements such as reducing lead oxide to decrease “flyers”, uniformity in the force needed to remove the bullet form the casing and keeping a priming material spread of +/- 1 mg, are implemented in our ongoing pursuit of perfection. Meeting SAAMI and CIP standards is just as important to us as the products we produce. We love what we do, and we want you to love what we do as well.

I like Aguila rimfire a lot. They offer a lot of varieties and so far for me have been about on par with CCI reliability wise. Who else makes a 60 grain .22? :D

They do have a bit of a special stink to them lol. Not bad but definitely different from what we are used to. Faintly sweet and ammonia-ish. Maybe it's a lack of sulphur that we are NOT smelling? This requires further testing...

This stuff Stinks.

I mean really it smell really bad to me when shooting.

It shoots fine, good pattern,  but has a odd smell that I just can't describe.

Maybe they are making their powder the old fashion way.

TIL that when the Confederate Army was low on gunpowder, bat caves were raided for poop. Bat guano’s high nitrate content provided a key ingredient for the production of gunpowder.

Don't breath the smoke too much or you will go bat sh!t crazy.  :)

It smell like the Russian stuff or what?

it kind of has a aroma about it, not sure how to describe it. Sort of a sweet smell.  It does not smell like russian ammo

I agree, kind of a sickly sweet smell.

However, it shoot good so when I find it at reasonable prices, I have no issue buying it.

What Russian stuff?

have some Russian 380 ammo KYP4 made in Novosibirsk Russia. It shoots very well but is very dirty and each time I come from the range I tear down and clean my guns because it leaves nasty black film on the actions of the guns......... :2cents: .

Speaking of current manufacture 7.62x39 and .223. Couldn't tell ya from which factories exactly, or whether they all are the same, but a smoke whiff of some is sort of half sweet half rotten egg. Or something.

Seems more than just one brand though.

You'd think they would have expanded a factory or three over there to supply it here in force by now, really, cause they do manufacture it.

Hmm, I've been shooting a lot of Aguila hyper velocity .22 LR lately through my Ruger Mark II and I didnt notice a smell at all. In all fairness I was at an outdoor range AND I was too busy being amazed at the group sizes/accuracy they produced over the cheap bulk stuff that I usually shoot. :D
