Quick question on "printing"

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)
The wife and I have been spending more time down in TN now that we have bought some property.

Here in NY we aren't allowed to carry, the license is a to and from range restricted license. If you are caught printing or anyone can see your firearm inside your jacket you will lose your license.

What is the situation down there if for example someone can figure out I'm carrying at the 4 o'clock in an inside waistband and my T shirt shows the outline of the grip? Edited by OH UNCLE PAUL

You can only carry a loaded handgun on the person in general public here with a carry permit. The permit allows concealed or open carry, so no matter how poorly you may conceal your heater, "printing" is not a legal issue.

Also, if he has a New York State carry permit, Tennessee will honor that. And printing isn't an issue.

We also have Utah and Pennsylvania.

Most upstate NY licenses are full carry. The Long Island ones have these restrictions on them. So I can't carry but my friend from upstate can carry on LI no problem. I can't wait to leave this hell hole behind forever.

Does anyone know about VA? Our property is right on the border and we are often crossing into VA. Edited by OH UNCLE PAUL

The worst that can happen to a legal permit holder is an aggravation from having to show your HCP to the police, assuming you are behaving like a normal human being.

There is about a 99% chance no one will notice.   I make a game of looking for them when out and about for fun, but most people wouldn't notice if you were stark nekkid and on fire ... their head is jammed up a cell phone or they have the observation skills of a rock.   Given cell phone, tablets, and other whatzzits people stuff in their pockets or on their belts etc, no one notices, for real, hardly ever.   If you work at it, minor printing simply won't be detected.  It would take a massive gun totally outlined to catch the attention of the 1% that actually is looking around and observant.  And of that 1%... most are fellow carriers.

It doesn't appear that Virginia honors NY permits. http://handgunlaw.us/states/virginia.pdf

If you meant above that you have permits from Utah and Pennsylvania, then you're good to go in Virginia for concealed carry

Virginia allows open carry without a permit, so printing shouldn't be an issue. Just be sure to have a valid permit from a state they honor or switch to open carry.

Handgunlaw shows that VA honors any Utah permit, but PA resident permit only, which is sort of odd if correct.

Down here it's open or concealed. VA is open with out a permit, and they allow concealed with the TN permit. It seems that you are most worried about " printing ". I say get over it! Most of the general public are oblivious to what goes on around them. I carry a full size M&P on my hip and don't care if someone notices a bump or "print". If I move it to the 4 or 3 position I think it just about disapears. I am 6'3" and 230 so I can hide a gun pretty well.

The OP needs to go to one of the websites that consolidates handgun carry laws for all states and look up the laws in the states he will be traveling through. No offense, but while I respect the advice from others on forums, I'd rather see something more official.

Here's one.

Oh, and one other thing. Printing is a function of how the holster tilts the weapon, how the belt holds the weapon, and how the fabric of the cover garment snags on the weapon. If you work at it, you can avoid printing with most handguns.

I adjust/modify my holster and belt until the grip touches my back instead of hanging out. That's mostly what causes printing. I carry in the 5 o'clock position. Any heavy t-shirt or polo shirt worn with the tail out will hide it nicely.  If I carry a different gun in the 3 or 4 o'clock position, I also have the grip angle in, but I wear a cover garment, like an open shirt made of heavy material. In fall, I wear a hipster North Face vest.

Absolutely.... Never solely rely on the advise given by internet forums! By all means ask questions (I do) but look it up yourself.... This is really true when it come to the little variables like resident verse non-resident permits. Such as MI does not accept non-resident permits; you must live in the state that issued your permit...

I highly recommend "CCW Concealed Carry 50 State Guide" it is available for the iPhone and maybe Android. They are constantly updating it, the data can be updated from the app so you don't have to download a new version all the time. As I recall it cost a couple of bucks but has a wealth of information when you're traveling. It keeps track of multiple carry permits and resident and non resident. You can drill down and read the actual law. Don't leave the state without it.

But does yours have the groovy leather shoulders?

A vest is an amazing concealment garmet. If I wasn't wearing one you would be able to plainly see the Glock 17 I'm wearing at 4 o clock position.

As far as printing, in Tennessee, as already stated it's a non-issue. As for other states, I would research their reciprocity laws on HCP'S and if you permit is legal than I'd check their laws on carry. Forum questions help, but can't be used as legal advice.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I was well aware that our licenses allowed us to carry so legal issues weren't really a concern.

The "printing" was what concerned me.
