Yes there are daily reminders of kindness, however in this day and time one has to actually look for it as it is not normally in the agenda to report such acts.

A lot more of this goes on than folks know, mainly because the guys who do it don't talk about it. They aren't doing it for commendation.

I don't know of many Highway Patrolmen of my generation who didn't at some time or another buy some meals or some gas or a tire or a cab ride or a rebuilt water pump, or.................. We just considered it a part of the job. But we got it back - I can recall a lot of Thanksgivings and Chrismas's when I got up from my table and went to pay for my meal only to be told that a family that had driven off twenty minutes earlier had paid for it.

Yep. It happens a lot and is very embarrassing when someone try's to make a big deal out of it. Agencies love it for the positive publicity but the doers are generally the lower profile officers just doing their jobs. Those are the actual officers that make a department and have happier careers.

I have made it a practice of waving to an officer in a squad car as he or she passes me from other direction. You would be surprised at how many wave back. I also make it a point to speak to them in a market if I am in there when they happen to be. I will always say hi or having a quiet day or anything nice and I always get a reply back....................

That happens everyday. The cops do it as part of their job because they care about other people. 99% of them will never tell anyone about it. It is a non story to the media. A cop doing something wrong happens much less frequently and is what the media wants to cover.

Having been a cop in California I just have to ask - you are waving your whole hand, aren't you.

Yeah, I remember some of those solitary finger gestures over the years and seeing most of them in my rear view mirror...
