It fires and loads the next round. However, the gun doesn't cock for the next round. I don't believe the sear is capturing the hammer. Any thoughts how I could test it or fix it?

What ammunition? Some standard velocity or subsonic can sometimes cause the malfunction you describe.

Have you swapped the hammer spring? It is part of the recoil system so a heavy hammer spring can work against the gun.

How new is the gun? They can sometimes have issues for the first few hundred rounds.

I would remove the hammer and put about a 15-20 degree bend in the hammer spring legs towards the hammer tail. This will reduce the upward pressure on the carrier. Or, you can clip one leg off of the hammer spring. Either way they end up being about the same.

Also, make sure you oil it pretty well for the first few hundred rounds. After that I would try to run it dry.

Is it the "new M&P compact" or the old one made by walther? The older one which is a larger size had some issues. I have had no trouble out of my compact, eats just about everything. Regardless I would call SW if it does it with several ammo brands.

It is the original, not the compact. The gun has quite a few rounds through. Probably more than 5,000. The hammer has not been disassembled at all. Just field stripping and cleaning. The recoil spring could probably stand to be replaced, but I wouldn't think that would cause a failure such as that. It doesn't do it every time, but it has started doing it a lot. It has done it with several different kinds of ammo, but I haven't tried mini mags.

It can be repeated hand cycling dummy rounds. I think the problem is that the sear isn't being released so that the hammer is being captured in cocked mode. Does anyone know what causes it to release the sear? I took it partially apart and still couldn't see anything.
