Luke 9511 - Safety Glasses over Glasses

Luke, not too long ago you started a thread about safety glasses over regular glasses.  Hopefully, you haven't gotten your new glasses yet.

I've come across new info since that thread died down.

First, I received an NRA Tactical catalog in the mail.  They have safety glasses specifically designed to fit over glasses for about $20.  They look cool in the catalog.  I had a pair a few years ago.  They are huge.  They look like the glasses you see on very old people some times that offer very large range of vision and don't let the slightest ray of sunlight in - I guess they wear them after some kind of surgery.

Then, earlier this week I had my eyes checked and needed a new pair of glasses.  I commented that one pair would cover more of my eye and that I'm a firearms enthusiast.  She went on the say that a new type of lenses plastic (or whatever they make them out of) was developed in the first gulf war that is far stronger from a protection point of view that anything else.

They only cost $20 more than the standard, though she ultimately gave them to me for the same price.

She said that you can't call them official safety glasses as the lenses I need are .5 mm thick and official safety glasses have to be 3 mm thick.  Though, she did say that it would take a lot to pierce them.

So, hopefully that will help out.

Yeah, they are available with most designs and meet the ANSI Z87.1 standard. I had a set of glasses made for when I went overseas using the polycarbonate lenses that were impact resistant. They were just as good as any other set of glasses I have owned but did have the ballistic protection.

You can get bare bones glasses with this protection for very, very cheap but don't expect to find them in any fashion magazine because they are UGLY, but they do work.

ok, I was trying to be nice by saying the glasses look like what old people wear.  As Dolomite and the member whose name can't be spelled in English have said, they make you look like an idjitatic dufuswad.  I love the reference to them being birth control glasses, meaning a guy can be assured that he'll never, ever, ever get laid by a woman who has seen him wearing them.

Dolomite,  I wasn't clear on part of your comment.  Are you saying that the lenses I'm getting in my new glasses will meet ANSI Z87.1? These are glasses I'll wear every day.  They aren't safety glasses, but rather regular glasses with lenses made of this impact resistant material.

Yes, if you order it they can make any lenses for any frame. Pretty sure the impact resistant lenses have the ANSI Z87.1 rating. I know when I went into to Walmart and asked about the lenses they charged me like $30 extra and the lenses met the ANSI Z87.1 rating.
