I've got a Shield and 5 mags, 3 8s and 2 7s. All seat and work fine with no muss or fuss. Don't know if Smith might be nice enough to just send you another 7 rd mag. That would be cheaper for them than shipping the gun both ways.

Something is obviously wrong. I've never had to use tools or tables to insert mags. Could just be the springs, but once you pass a certain point of rough you start breaking things. I would heed Daves advice and contact S&W. The worst that could happen is you get a free hat out of it. :)

These are both perfectly normal "complaints" with a shield that isn't broken in yet. Once the gun gets 300-500rds through it the slide stop will loosen up a bit and allow you to drop the slide with it. In the mean time just run the slide on reloads. As for the 7rd mag being hard to seat, fully load it and let it sit for a few days. This will break the spring in a bit and make it easier to seat. It will always be harder to seat than the 8rd mag, but will be significantly easier after break in. I read about these same exact complaints constantly when people announce they have bought a new shield. I had the same issues with mine when I bought it back in mid 2013. Mine has been absolutely flawless through the last 2000rds, but was very stiff when I first pulled it out of the box.

I have had none of these issues with my 9mm Shield. I carry a Glock for work and have since 96. I really do like them and they are great pistols but I find myself carrying my Shield when not at work. I really like the way the Shield shoots and the ease to conceal it. When I'm not carrying the Shield when I am off  I generally have my FS H&K VP-9. If you like Glock's you would love the VP-9.
