Proper way to dispose of live primers?

Recommended Posts

When loading on my Dillon 550B, after I seated and crimped the round, I discovered the case had split, so I used a bullet puller to get the bullet and powder out, but what about the live primer?   Is it safe to run a live primer thru a decapping die?   If so, is that primer still reusable?   And if not, how do you properly dispose of a live primer.    In our county, our trash center uses compactors, and in my mind that's just asking for the primer to discharge and possibly causing a small fire, or some other issues....    So what are your thoughts?

I have pushed a few live primers out, a few did discharge, scared me good, I do not do it any more.

Just use them for dry fire practice.

Dang I thought pushing primers out was fun, and disappointed if they did not go bang.

You can unseat them. Just go very slow and deliberate. I've decapped live primers and reused them. Just be careful enough that you don't disturb the anvil.

I've de-capped them with a universal de-cap die, never had an issue. I put mine in a sandwich bag add some water & let 'em soak.

Don't trust them after that pin hits the anvil. Caster said he's done it so it's likely ok. He's been around the reload block a day or two,

LOL. I'm just not a trusting soul.

I have done it a whole bunch with shotgun primers......only a few times with pistol.  Never had an issue doing so.  But do go slowly and make sure you have your glasses on.  Things are made to explode you know.

I don't reload but have read several times that soaking them in a light thin oil such as ATF will render them inert and safe to remove and dispose of.

But if the case is split and it won't chamber.......

I just went back and read your Op, did you not resize the cases before you loaded the bullet and crimp the case?

When I split a case, and after I pull the bullet and save the powder and bullet, I resize the split case and save the primer. I use them in practice rounds. I have not had a misfire with any of them.
