Dew point and condensation on firearms

Recommended Posts

Ok, so it's getting that time of the year where the humidity is high.
And the dew point is pretty close to where most of our thermostats are set.
I was first made aware of this when shooting air rifles when I was younger.
I take the rifle from the cool house and walk out in the warm moist Tennessee air where a nice layer of condensation formed on the metal. No fun....

So does anyone else have ideas other than turning the thermostat up in the house or leaving the rifle in the garage? Lol

Actually, I just leave it in a gun case and let it gradually come to temperature.
But still, you have to
wait. Lol

WD-40 Corrosion Specialist is the best thing to use on guns that are not handled regularly. There was a big study done and it won. It took two months in the weather before the first spec of rust showed up on bare metal. Most of the "gun products" didn't make it 1/2 as long and some didn't even last days before rust set in.

I had never heardone of it.
I did find a good test of 46 different oils. Many were fun oils.
And WD-40 Corrosion Specialist did great as you reported.
Thanks for letting me know about it. My local Wal-Mart even has it.

Don’t get regular WD40 anywhere around your guns; especially if they are going to sit for a while.

M-Pro 7, CLP, Rem oil, Hoppes or any of the other proven performers will work fine. Especially if you clean and wipe down your guns every once in a while.

"the time of year when humidity is high".... Like not January or February? ;)

The WD-40 Corrosion Specialist is different from regular WD-40. And I found some recently at Lowes. It was something like $10 for a smallish can, but I got one anyway.

A parts washer does well.

heat.

put it in your hot car on some old rags after you have wiped off the thicker bits with paper towels. Much of it will seep out.

If you gun gets wet, clean it when you are done?   I have never had this problem.  But like others said, when the humidity is that high, I stay inside!

I use rem-oil as a general wipe-down .. spray and wipe.   Its relatively cheap and available and spray on is quick and painless to get it done.

I use WD-40 all the time on my guns but not as a lubricant. I use it as a solvent to cut grime loose and it works great at it. I saturate the parts to be cleaned, let it sit for a few minutes then use high pressure air to blow all the WD-40 and crud out.  Works really well to clear out old, dried out oils too.

WD-40's best use is as a solvent.  I use it to clean the chain on my motorcycle.  Spray it down and let it soak for a minute, then wipe until it's clean.  Takes less than 10 minutes and I've never had my chain get rusty.
