The Tennessee state law specifically refers to 18 U.S.C. § 922(g). That wouldn’t make it a violation but 18 U.S.C. § 922(b) would. ...

??? That only refers to prohibited transactions by an FFL.

I figured that I would bump this instead of starting a new thread.

A coworker has a son that is 20, turning 21 in eight months. He is wondering whether he can keep his handgun in his car over the next months and then get his permit. I believe this to be the case, and seem to remember this very discussion here. My understanding is that as long as a person is not prohibited from possessing a firearm and is in lawful control of the vehicle, they may keep a rifle, shotgun, or pistol in their vehicle with round chambered.

It’s very simple, tell him to wait 8 months.  Then there is no question as to legal age of handgun ownership.

It’s even more simple than that, the father is old enough to be my father and over twice my age.

I gently suggested that, but eight months seems like forever and I don’t think that’s what they’re going to do!

Some people just have no patience.  It only causes problems for them.

I agree. It

I understand his (the son) excitement, it wasn’t that long ago that I was there too (but that was before the law changed regarding a loaded handgun in your vehicle).

Chances are everything over the next eight months will be ok, but there is also a chance that it will cause him an issue.

Also a chance a gat in the car could save his life.

Point is, it's legal in this state for an 18 year old to own a pistol. It's legal for an adult to have a pistol in his private vehicle in this state unless one has had a disqualifying episode.

Chance of a dumb cop making an issue? Well, whatever, life's full of possible bad things, but we seldom face the ones we most worry about, and even if it happened it wouldn't be that big a deal in the end.

Oh Shoot is correct...but which is more likely, run in with the police or a bad guy....some would say you risk getting beat up or shot either way.....just sayin.

Couldn't say. I've never been anywhere near the middle of a bell curve on almost anything in my life. ;)

But one could cost you a possible but unlikely night in jail and one unlikely but possibly your life.

The latter outcome is a distinct possibility with both.

Nice bon mot, but realistically, not unless you point it at the cop. ;)

While it may be true for the paler and more mature, it’s not true for everyone.
