Introduction and a plea (with some questions too!)

Hello everyone,

I recently arrived to TN from Hawaii, a place I was happy to leave. I'm originally from the Deep South but have roots in southern Kentucky and Tennessee. So far, I love this state and its people. I grew up around firearms and had several as well as a carry permit back home; however, I sold them and let my permit lapse when I moved to Hawaii since it's pointless to even try to own guns in that state.

However, I do have a plea. I'm all for people owning firearms if they can be responsible with them. Please don't be an idiot and shoot handguns in a residential area. I have been here less than a month, but two nights ago my wife and I were woken up around 4am when a bullet exited the ceiling and struck the wall in our bedroom. From the angle, it had to come from above and nobody heard a gunshot, so I surmise it was likely a stray. It was definitely a handgun round, looked to be about a .40 or .45 caliber. I was both angry and disappointed, as this could have been potentially lethal or injured my family or myself.

Having said that, is this a common thing around here? I chalked it up to a freak occurrence, but any suggestions on what to do to prevent this in the future? Probably more to alleviate anxiety than anything, as my wife can't sleep at night now. I was thinking of getting some thick plywood sheets to place in the attic above the bedroom.

Otherwise, hello everyone and it's good to be out of paradise!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that no one on here would be shooting willy nilly especially at 4am. Don't know where you live but there are obviously irresponsible people with guns.

It's never happened where I am in east TN. Personally I wouldn't spend the money on an extra layer of plywood. If it happened again I would move!

Welcome back to America! Hawaii is over rated inmo. Good luck with the crazies where you are and stay safe!

Shooting into the air seems to be a lot more common in the city than in rural areas. It seems to be popular in all of Iraq too.

Welcome to Clarksville and the site.  Clarksville isn't too bad but it does have its areas such as Lincoln homes where you should stay away from.  Every now and then you will hear shots and never find out the reason for them, but for the most part if its outside the known bad areas its either domestic or sd related, and rare. Just report it to LEOs, though I doubt they'll find the perps, and if it happens again, I'd move.

Thanks. I've heard mixed things about Clarksville. We are renting a home off exit 1 and the area seems to be good. Neighbors say it's quiet around here and only residents tend to come back here.

What are the other bad areas of Clarksville? And if we, say, wanted to break our lease if possible (my wife is freaking out about it) what areas should we look at? I have seen Adams mentioned. She, so far, isn't buying the whole, "if it happens again then we'll move"

I did hear shots in the late afternoon that day, and maybe once a week or two before. Back home I would hear the same but knew it was people in their yards target shooting or something. We def did call LEO

Not common.  There are more guns here, and its more common than it would be in place where guns all all but banned, but its not common at ALL.   You might report it to the police, if you feel its worth your time.  It is NOT legal to fire ANY guns inside most "city limits" which generally means "most populated areas".   Depending on where you are the guys target shooting may even be breaking the law... I don't know the area.

Most likely, unless you are in a rough area, this was an accidental (negligent) discharge from someone upstairs (whats up there??).  Or, if you don't have an upstairs neighbor, its possible it was fired from a higher elevation (??).   A handgun round won't penetrate a roof falling back to earth if fired into the air so it had to be fired from above you *somehow*.

Again, if you don't live in a rough area, this should not ever happen again.   Hopefully whoever did it learned a lesson and needs clean underwear ... "I didn't think it was loaded" mentality.

I think if you showed the lender the bullet holes and lodged a safety concern you could possibly find grounds for breaking the lease without penalty.

The exit one area is mostly active and retired military guys, it is as safe an area as just about anywhere except maybe the higher end areas such as by exit 11 or the outskirts or Clarksville.  If you are on the other side of Hwy 24 where its more rural you may have areas where target shooting is allowed, but on the side where the theatre is at, its frowned upon.  Shooting within city limits is only controlled by a noise ordinance here, so if there is enough land to safely do so, and nobody complains, it can be done. But I have not heard of anyone around there doing so.

Adams is nice just remember you're about 20-30 minutes from any shopping areas if you live there

Had I not seen your posted location, I'd had to ask if you moved to Memphis.  Just about no telling what might come thru a roof here.  Welcome to Tennessee.
