Got my NRA certification a year ago, never taught a class, what do I need to do to keep my certification?

I'm unclear if I have to be teaching a class every so often or if I can just pay every 2 years to keep it. I got the certification more out of curiosity instead of wanting to become a professional instructor.

I've had mine about 15 years and last "taught" CCW classes in LA in 2005. I pay and keep mine active just in case. It's helped in other venues as well...

As of right now there is no particular number of classes you have to teach to maintain your certification. The word is that eventually (probably soon)there will be a 1 class per year requirement. You can cover that by simply assisting another instructor with an NRA class.

Just curious, but why have the cert if you're not going to use it for teaching carry permit classes? Is there some other benefit for just having it? Edited August 7, 2015 by JohnC

That's a good question. I've always informally taught people how to shoot and I thought that having a NRA certification would lend some credibility when talking to people about taking a class. It's made a difference. I've spoken to a few ladies that I work with when I overheard them talking about needing to learn how to shoot their husband's guns. When I mentioned that I was a "NRA Certified Instructor" they seemed much more open about asking questions and more interested in learning. I haven't taught any official NRA classes but, like I said, I do a lot of informal teaching. Edited August 7, 2015 by timcar86

Sitting through a 12 hour class and shooting a paper target at 15 yards. Open book test at the end. I think the cost was around $400 when it was all said and done.
