Suppressor rattling

Recommended Posts

I was shooting a suppressor the other day and after I finished and took it off the pistol I noticed it was making a rattling noise. So after shaking it out. It had small pieces of what I think was the copper jacket from the ammo I was shooting. Is there something wrong or is it normal?

Uhhhh...pretty sure that's not normal. What ammo, can, caliber, etc.

Ammo was a mix of American Eagle 147 grain fmj 9mm and Federal 115 grain fmj 9mm. I was comparing the sound of the 2 since the 147 American Eagle stays subsonic.

Can was a Silencerco 45 Osprey

I was shooting 9mm through the 45 caliber suppressor using a 1/2x28 to .578 adapter

Pistol was a Walther PPQ M2 9mm with a factory threaded barrel

The only time I saw jacket separation like this was my buddy and I were at the range all day and he had one of those heat mirage mitigation deals on his can and it overheated and caused some metal to sheer off the bullet. I'm sure someone will come along that's seen it and dealt with it. I'll ask some guys.

have you looked though the baffles for a strike?

As far as I can tell everything looks normal inside. I am not sure what baffle strike might look like though?

It doesn't look like any of the picture that come up with a google search of strikes. As far as I can see it looks normal inside and out

I would look really hard for any shiny areas in the silencer. If you can take it apart, inspect it and remove all the loose debris. My wife qualified for her HCP using Federal and her target looked like a shotgun blast. Not sure what was going on but it was like the bullet was coming apart midway down range and I have never seen that with a pistol before.

If all else fails SilencrCo has the best reputation for CS. Seen people screw up and destroy their SilencerCo can. 100% the customer's fault and SilencerCo always replaces the silencer with a new one. I know one guy who destroyed 5-6 SilencerCo's cans, one at a time, and they replaced them as he broke them.

That's not hard to do for a REPUTABLE company.  You know as well as I do We are getting butt raped on new commercial suppressors.  I be the markup/profit margin is 500% or better.

Not really. Price a pound of iconel then realize it probably gets sold back as chips for recycling at 10% of the sale price. The ones that are probably marked up the most are the aluminum ones because materials are so cheap and aluminum is relatively easy to machine.

If China could make and import silencers most would not be over $50.

Making a decent silencer is not hard nor expensive but where it gets expensive is when you are the lightest or quietest and that is why state of the art silencers, or anything, generally costs a lot.

Working in a couple of Tool & Die shops for 12 or 13 years I did see one thing, shops who buy/use volume get MUCH better deals.

Nickel alloys are indeed expensive but more to us than manufacturers who buy a trailer load of it.

The YHM Ti phantom goes for close to a grand but I doubt they have mor than a hundred in it. Edited by Caster

Thought I would bump this up again. Hoping someone else knows what is going on. I shot it with a G21 and nothing rattling but tried another 9mm a G19 and it had the same small pieces of metal as before.

I really like shooting 9mm but sure don't want to damage the suppressor.

Anyone else shot 9mm through a 45 Osprey without problems and what setup and ammo do you use?

Thought I'd let everyone know what was giving me troubles just encase you ever have the same problem. I replaced the aftermarket 1/2x28 to .578 adapter with a Silencerco adapter and I am not getting the copper fragments from any ammo that I put through it.

Thanks for the help.

For my education, how did you come to suspect that was the cause?
