Bug Out Bag Ideas

I finally acquired my Bug Out Bag a few weeks ago, and a S.O.C. Three Day Elite at that! (Whoever says money can't buy happiness can choke on by bag.) So, I've been putting a lot of thought into what to pack in it for various SHTF scenarios like natural disasters, terrorist attacks, zombie outbreaks, EMPs, CMEs, and Alien invasions. Here's my checklist of things I need to get  so far (I'll add more as I can come up with, you add any good ideas you have too):

Small fishing kit, small kit for starting fires. I have a little mess of strong key rings and a few carabiners, and a small spool of 100 yds of finer paracord (in addition to a regular 100' paracord) and a 5x8 tarp which is always in the trunk. Figure that can work into a small shelter. Small metal mug. I guess it'd be a handy cup or small cooking pot. I keep meaning to get a smaller folding saw and toss in there.

I'm no survival expert by any means. Heck, I haven't gone camping in 20 years, and that was in a pop-up.

Oh, and spare loaded mags. I have 3 M&P 40s that can run full size mags (Pro, regular full size, and compact with adapters) and there is always at least one around. Four mags with 180gr HSTs in the bag, in addition to the mag in the gun, and usually another 1 or 2 in the glove box. I'm a mag whore. Edited August 1, 2015 by musicman

I'll get a PALS adapter and strap it to the back. I just have to get it converted to run on fairy tears, since it should be abundant at that time.

A good multitool, I run a Leatherman MUT. I'd suggest a heavy camp knife over a machete for local terrian. A machete doesn't hold a light to a 10-12" bladed camp knife or Khukri. Pair it with a 3.5" bladed fixed blade and you have an amazing do anything combo.

I would add a few things if you plan on heading to the woods.

A cooking pot of some sort.
A storage container for liquids
A portable solar charger
Soap to wash with
Salt
Hatchet for when you run out of gas

Entrenching tool...theyre cliche but if you need to move some dirt, edge your sidewalk, have a portable griddle or bludgeon your fellow man then there is no alternative.

Multi-tool for sure, Leatherman makes good ones, I cant tell you how many standard issue Gerbers I have snapped.

Ratcheting screwdriver with different bits...you never know.

Im not sure whats all in that med kit by the picture but if nothing else all Id carry is torniquets, tramau dressings (Isreali bandages), hemostatic dressings (QuikClot) and if you have the skill then Saline Locks and one or two 1000mL bags of lactated ringers or saline.

Compass and protractor...along with good elevation maps that are up to date so that Lake you found on your 1998 map doesnt turn into a Condo in 2016.

Water purification tablets.

Hand crank emergency band radio (unless its an EMP then maybe not)

Id suggest loading all of this and humping it...all of that gear, plus rations and ammunition and weaponry is going to weight around 100+ which isnt too bad if youre used to it...most people would get smoked after a few hundred feet.

Or you can do what some friends of mine have done and have 55 gal drums stashed around everywhere near Fayetteville, NC filled with nitrogen to preserve reloading supplies, ammo, guns, MREs, smokes, dip and booze.

A chainsaw is great to clear downed trees over roads if you're bugging out with a vehicle. Obviously, it won't fit in your bag though. Hm. Very good idea on the TP. Does anyone in Smyrna have a vacuum sealer and would you be willing to offer your poo-paper-packing-prowess for a box of ammo? I'd like to pack maybe 6-8 rolls to split up in BOBs for each vehicle, and my larger "get to the farm" kit. Space is a premium in those tubs.

Already have a good Leatherman skeletool thingy. Also have a decent Estwing hatchet. I have a sawyer 4L gravity filter doohickey as well, so I can probably fill up a few canteens with one or two runs of it at a time. Maybe some more ideas. (#### I hope I hit it rich a few years before SHTF!!):

Drop the tent and go with a tarp instead. Non stretch cordage!!! Coffee filters to strain water through. A good lensatic or Silva compass and road and topo maps of the area(s). Bouillon cubes, tea bags, jerky and some hard candy. Don't forget at least a couple gallon sized Ziploc type bags. Also a surplus poncho and liner are priceless.

I'm going to keep it simple. People look smarter when they just have a backpack and they use both straps.
