What do you use as a test gun for ammo ?

I use my Ruger P94 9mm as a test gun for my 9mm reloads since it's built so tuff. It has taken a lot of rounds and still comes out nice . These Rugers in the P-series have really been built well.

 What do you guys use ?

Each gun is different and that's the difference between reloading and handloading.

Every gun I own has their own preferences and I load for each accordingly.
Saving factory boxes from the trash at the range and marking them accordingly helps a lot.

I usually load for a specific gun even for Pistol.   Mostly Glock 17/22/30/34  Beretta 92fs  Colt Python Anaconda.

Wow, I know you guys are thorough. No sarcasm intended, that's great for each gun.

 

Since I'm not into re-loading, and really don't see it happening for me; I still use the old methods of trying different brands and loads with each gun.

 

But as accurately, or possibly inaccurately as I shoot, that's all that seems necessary for me.

I only load for a specific gun when I am going for  accuracy (hunting) otherwise I just shoot out of any gun/rifle that matches the caliber or can shoot that caliber i.e 44 mag and 44 special.  Sometimes a gun gets finicky and won't shoot a certain projo, then I may load for a specific gun but that's rare, only happened once so far and the gun just needed broke in.

So far I have only loaded for .38 Special.  I don't load to +P levels so both my 642 - which is +P rated - and my GP100 get used.  My Police Positive not so much - although my loads should be safe for it, too, and I have shot some of my reloads from it.  I don't necessarily load to get the most accuracy out of each gun, individually.  Instead, my goal is to find the load that is the most accurate across all of my guns in the caliber - giving up a little accuracy in the individual guns in favor of across the board accuracy in all of them.  I am actually still working toward that goal.

I will shoot it thru all my guns in that caliber so I know it works in all.

I don't make anything risky so I don't need some special gun to test with.  If I were going to redline, I would use something both durable and replaceable just in case, but honestly... there isn't much sense in that.   The "do not exceed" loads in your books are still safe and have a "screw up" factor applied to account for measurement error  ... most peoples gear is +- 1/2 a grain or more for example on the average ...  You could probably go another grain or two over the do not exceed without any penalty in well made firearms.   But again, why bother... its harder on the guns, uses more powder, and probably isn't the ideal accuracy load anyway...  and the few FPS you get isn't worth all the negatives.  If you want a bigger boom, get a bigger gun.
