This is your back to basics camp knife made from 5/32" 1095 carbon steel. It has spalted tamerind scales with SS pins and lanyard hole and file work on the spine. The blade is 5" long and the OAL is about 10 1/4". And yes...that's a hamon you see on the blade.

This is an experimental piece on my part. I much to learn about heat treating and hamon's but am very happy with this first attempt. It will be used by me as a test blade so it will see quite a bit of use.

Nice.  I have always kind of leaned more toward the hunting, skinning or Bowie knife type blade when it came to fixed blades just because those were what I was familiar with growing up.  Lately, though, I am coming to realize that I really like the look of a lot of the "camp knife" type blades more and that such blades are probably more 'useful' for an all-around, often carried knife..  I have long liked the drop-point blade style in folding 'sodbuster' type knives - both to look at and to use - and have come to realize that I like the same look in fixed blades..  I really like how this one sort of combines something of the look/strength of a drop point with the enhanced 'pointiness' of a clip point.  Would you consider it to be a modified clip point or maybe a hybrid drop-clip?

I'm not sure. I was just drawing things out on a  piece of paper one day and ended up with this and thought I'd make one. laugh.gif I guess "camp knife" bridges the gap between many different shapes/sizes of blades.

GREAT job on the Hamon line! Great looking knife! Is that 1095 or 01 steel? Can you go into a little detail how you achieved it and what hardness you think you got? Just amazing Donald! Now I'm a little embarrassed to post my latest blade! You are an inspiration! PS, love the file work! Edited by sybo

It's 1095.....1095 is much easier to achieve a hamon with than O1.....at least I'm told. I still have a lot to learn about all that. As far as the RC hardness....I'm thinking somewhere between 60-64.  I need to get a set of hardness files to be sure.  As far as the process I followed this knifemaker's lead.  And never be embarrassed to post your work.  We have a good support group here. :)
