Refinishing in Memphis area.

Here;s my situation. I walk 3-4 miles almost daily for exercise. Naturally, this time of year I sweat buckets while doing this. 

For a carry gun during these walks I have a S&W Model 36. Its an older gun that I picked up some years ago on the cheap mainly because the finish is badly worn. And there lies my problem. I'm sweating so much that the gun has become a rust magnet. Despite wiping it down every day, I still have to give it a through cleaning at least once a week and often twice. This morning I checked it and had a hard time opening the cylinder due to the rust.  :eek:

I'm giving serious consideration to having the gun refinished with one of the more durable type finishes. Duracoat  or something similar? 

So I'm looking for options, opinions and experience with these type coatings. Also, does anybody know of a place in the Memphis area that does this? I'd hate to have to ship it off for months to have this done.

Well Duracoat or Cerakote will certainly work, with my recommendation being towards the Cerakote. That said I'm going to make some additional recommendations which revolve around the overall condition of the J-Frames surface, specifically rust and pitting. One finish that does quite well is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkerizing . If you keep it properly oiled it is very rust resistant and looks fantastic on an older, worn gun. The other is http://www.armoloyftworth.com/Armoloy_WebDevelopment/Web_Pages/Firearms_Applications.htm I particularly like this finish as it holds up well. Finally I'll recommend having the gun micro bead blasted and a hard chrome finish, a black chrome finish if a local plating shop offers it is even better. No I'm not a fan of chrome on guns but sometimes on a baldly worn guns finish where its subjected to a high rust environment makes it a strong candidate.

Awesome Idea.  I need a rusty blued gun.  Farm snakes can't see rust.

 

All jokes aside, if you don't get a nibble, I know a fellow in Bartlett that can make a old ugly piece of metal look new.
