I have a choice between a Glock 36 and a ati 1911 style officers model. Which has more readily available parts and which will hold up in the long run? Will I do more maintenance on one? What is your opinion about safety or trigger safety?

I'm not a Glock guy, but assuming both guns are in good/similar shape, it's the G36 and a no-brainer, imho. Dead nuts easy to take down and clean, a reputation built on reliability, and strong value retention when you want to trade/sell later.

I have neither weapon and no dog in the fight.

As for safeties, my opinion is that the 4 rules of gun safety are your trigger safety. I carry all kinds and generally prefer striker fired guns with no manual safeties. I'm an M&P man most of the time. When the mood strikes I bust out an older 3913... cuz I feel like a 90s Miami cop when I carry that thing. Edited July 22, 2015 by musicman

For me it would depend on what I wanted it for. For a carry gun... G36. For a range, nightstand, tinkering, or just like the way it feels gun... 1911. As far as parts and holding up... hard to beat a Glock on that, but there are no shortage of parts for a 1911 either. You also have a polymer frame gun vs a steel frame. My Glocks have required very little maintenance

Because of the sizes of the two options, I'm guessing you're looking at it for a carry weapon, I would say G36 and don't look back.  There's not much more one can say about the G36, it's a Glock...it requires very little maintenance and just works day in and day out with no worries.  I'll probably catch flack from the 1911 guys but in my experience they can be more finicky and usually require more attention.  I will say, I'm a glock fan.  I have trained with them as carry weapons for so long, it'd be hard for me to remember to flip the thumb safety, get the same grip on the beavertail, all while drawing the weapon from a concealed holster under stress...  It's a personal thing, but especially considering ATI vs Glock, I think Glock wins that one every time...

I have used many brands and types and except for a Taurus PT1911 all my 1911s have been just as reliable as any.

Go with what makes you happy.

I am just naturally more accurate with a 1911 than any other platform so I like them.

OK. Let's break this down into components.

 

Ready availability of parts. That's an odd question as either have readily available repair parts and aftermarket parts. The only limiting factor is your own ability to install replacement parts should there be the need to do so. Magazines and holsters are readily available for either with a slight edge to the 1911 as the G-36 magazine is proprietary. If you went with the G-30 you could utilize G-21 magazines as well. The Officers Style 1911 will use any .45 ACP 1911 GM style of magazine.  

 

Which will outlast the other? I seriously doubt you will ever shoot enough rounds through either pistol to impact its service life.

 

Now as to the maintenance side of the equation. The 1911 OM style pistol needs to be kept clean and lubricated otherwise it will have some reliability issues. The Glock isn't as sensitive to being run dirty or somewhat dry and is more resistant to corrosion.

 

Now as to the safety question...that's been debated every since the first G-17 came out so I'll only say training, proper equipment and not playing around with the pistol.

Thanks for the help. I went to the lgs and he now has a Glock 21 at the same price. I don't know if I can conceal the 21 but it is a thought.

Go with the G-30 SF then if you can, it's G-19 sized so carry and concealment is less of a problem. Even better you can carry a G-21 magazine(s) as spares for added round capacity.

Smarter choice might be the G30S. Thinner slide, yet still uses the SF frame for G21 mag use as your spare.

both guns have millions upon millions of spare parts and aftermarket parts etc.

both will hold up for many, many thousands of rounds. 

the 1911 is more complex and therefore most likely to need maintenance.  Things like busted extractors happen more often in a 1911.  By more often, that is still pretty rare.

the safety on a 1911 is critical if you are carrying it (range guns you can leave it off all the time).  Trigger is too light and short to risk it, and any carry besides cocked and locked negates the entire platform.

the safety on a glock is a joke.  It does not really prevent idiot discharges, and it makes the already mushy and weird trigger even weirder.  I took the spring out of my only trigger safety gun and glued it in place (that is, pushed back and flush to the trigger).  I hate them. 

 

either is a fine choice.   1911 is a heavy, low cap, large gun that is well made with an awesome trigger.  Glocks are high recoil, annoying trigger, high cap, well made guns.   They are nothing alike in any way apart from both being firearms.   Pick whichever you like best.
