IMR 4166

4166 is a new kid on the block, seems to be pretty close to 4064.

Who's tried it? I'm always looking to tinker with my .308 loads.

I tried some - it meters even worse than Varget. Slightly longer, at least the pound of each I had on-hand and compared with.

Yeah it does. I won't even try to meter it. For what I'll be trying it for, I'll hand weigh each charge.

I picked up a pound today and will be trying it out for 308 and 6.5 Creedmore. More options are always a good thing.

I picked up a pound the other day, too, after reading that it was basically Varget. We'll see how it does in some .308. :up:

Not to be argumentative but how is it "Basically Varget"?  Hodgdons website lists it next to IMR 4064 which is a bit hotter than Varget.

Is there any rhyme or reason behind the powder numbering system?

I just picked up a pound of 4166  to try.....   Are all the IMR 4*** powders extruded?

As far as I know.
It would not meter through my Lyman 55 without cutting kernels. Surprisingly this is the one thing the cheapazz Lee plastic measure is good for. It meters extruded powder without shearing and does it quite well. Mine ran +/- .2 grains. I weigh every charge on important stuff so I set the charge back .5g and trickled each one in. Much faster than using a dipper and weighing out each charge that way.

I've noticed 4166 runs MUCH cleaner than whatever Lake City loads M80 ball with. I mean a LOT cleaner.

Yeah, my RCBS uniflow doesn't like extruded powders, so I do the same method... Perhaps one day I'll get a fancy electronic powder measurer, but for now, slow and steady wins the race

I said that too, That was several years ago. I don't load much bulk ammo anymore. Now, I'm happy with slow and steady.

Is there much load data available for it yet. That's the thing I hate about new powders,,,,,they aren't in my old reloading manuals.
