Ex-CNN Host's Husband Involved in Shoot-Out At Motel 6

She's really taken a fall in her fortunes if she's staying at Motel 6.

Apparently, she and her husband had not intended to stay the night, but after going out for dinner with friends, they were too tired to get back on the road.

For those not familiar Lynne Russell not only was a long time anchor for CNN but at the same time worked as a private investigator, had a carry permit, and worked as a reserve deputy all while working at CNN. Not exactly the typical CNN anchor personality..... Her husband Chuck De Caro is a former SF soldier member 20th SF Group. These were the WRONG people to try to rob.....

For the rest of us, read the story of what happened....

How often do we consider getting in a gunfight right as we get out of the shower? With our wife in the room as potential backstop? Your gunfight might not be what you previously envisioned.....

And we see AGAIN, hits to the abdomen do NOT always stop people....De Caro took 1 to the leg, 2 to the abdomen and still killed the other guy and survived . Peripheral hits MIGHT stop someone but often do not. Plan accordingly. If your idea of marksmanship with a pistol is "minute of man" then you might want to rethink that .....

I remember her too, those were the days before cnn became so tainted.  Glad this turned out well for the good guys and I hope he recovers 100%!

While I don't dispute your underlining logic, I think in this case it was the intestinal fortitude of a man like deCaro that was the major factor in how he was able to endure.

And THAT is the issue.

Not everyone is a candy a$$ panzy who will pee their pants at the sight of a gun. Some people are card carrying badasses who you will have to internally disassemble if they attack you. The problem is they do not let you know in advance which they are and you won't find out until they start taking hits.

So is it better to err on the side of caution and train for shooting them multiple times in important places as fast as you can as a default response , or is it better to just try to hit 'em anywhere as fast as you can and hope they stop? Yet there are people out there who teach that shot placement is not as important as getting a quick hit ANYWHERE on them is...... The BG in the Motel 6 scored quick peripheral hits on DeCaro first.....but they didn't STOP DeCaro...........now the BG is dead.

I also didn't see where any particular caliber weapons were used. I wonder what caliber gun the bad guy had verses what the good guy had?.......................Curious minds like to know!!! :squint:

From reading a few different news reports...Lynne Russell said the guy had a .40 cal shinny looking gun.  Her husband started with a pocket 9mm..but emptied  that gun and continued  with another gun, cause the guy kept firing.  (She told the gunman she would look in her purse to see what they had. She reached down and put one of the two handguns the couple had in a side table into the purse. She gave the handbag to her husband.)

The bad guy was still on parole from Memphis.

They said they chose the motel 6 because the allowed dogs.

Yep. I remember her stint at CNN, she was a smart, savvy news reader who looked and sounded great. She sure has an interesting backstory too, I wonder if she was perceived as to long in the tooth for network news or wasn't considered liberal enough.

This is one reason why I really hate staying in outside access motels. They seem to attract the scum of the earth.

By Lynne Russell's own account - in an article written by her - the gun used to defend the couple's lives and stop/kill the bad guy was a .380.

Yep, believe it or not those .380 rounds didn't just bounce off the BG's t-shirt.  In fact, they proved pretty effective.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2015/07/08/theres-no-debate-about-guns-im-alive-and-so-is-my-husband-because-had-one-in-my-purse.html

Just to clarify based on her own account, she states that she and her husband had brought two legal .380s into the room.  She says nothing about her husband using a 9mm at any time.  Further, while she states that her husband emptied one of the .380s she doesn't indicate that he used more than the one gun.

I think her husband likely qualifies as one of the 'card carrying badasses' that Cruel Hand Luke referred to earlier.  I mean, the guy had just gotten out of the shower and, according to Ms. Russell, was "stark naked and dripping wet".  I mean, could a person possibly be much more vulnerable, both physically and mentally, yet he responded to deadly force with equally deadly force, survived taking five rounds from the BG and killed said BG.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” she said. “He took three shots, including a couple to the abdomen. But magically, his organs were not affected.

"He’s my hero. He saved my life,” Russell added.

“I was determined to save my dream girl’s life — even if it cost my own,” he told The Post.

That's the quintessential dewy eyed chick flick movie material story women dream about.
Betcha a dollar his story gets a ...happy ending...when he gets outta the hospital.

Yep.

But there again, if he really loves her, like i love mine, like everyone should love theirs, how COULD he do ANY less?
I couldn't live without mine and I damn sure wouldn't wanna live knowing I might still have her had I done what a man should.

Great story but I'm not seeing any mention of the .380 caliber being used. Where is it?

He didn't expect Chuck to open the bathroom door. My husband  (Air Force Academy, U.S. Army Special Forces), said "What's going on here?" and advanced into the room. Stark naked and dripping wet, he maneuvered himself in front of the small table between the beds, concealing two small .380 legal handguns we'd brought in from the car.

If he was stark naked and dripping wet, where did he conceal the two .380s?

As I understand it, she had managed to slip one into her purse, then handed the purse to her husband with the comment, "I believe we have something in here we can give him," or words to that effect.
