Powder Coat lubed bullets

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have 15-20K of 125gr Valiant hard cast bullets. Is there anyway to get the existing lube off to be able to Powder coat them? Great bullets (for the price) I just really don't like cleaning a barrel that has had 200-300 rounds of lead thru it not to mention the the smoke from the lube.

Thanks

Well it depends on the size after powder coating. Treat a powder coated bullet like a cast bullet as far as size goes. For my 308 bores I size my PCd bullets to .310.

And just to ward off future issues avoid using Harbor Freight powders unless you are using a gun. Any other method to coat bullets will be hit and miss. I use, and prefer, Powder Buy The Pound over all others. There is a seller on eBay names DMC-2 or something like that. His powder goes on great but has a lower melting point and in some calibers/guns the powder coating will fail leaving lead in the barrel's throat and leading to malfunctions.

Rather than bring the water up to a boil WITH the bullets in there I would boil the water, remove it from the heat for a couple of minutes then add the bullets. If you heat the pot with the bullets in the pot the ones on the bottom might get too hot and deform. Now I could be totally wrong, and I hope I am, but it would also be bad to ruin a few hundred bullets.

I have spoke to people who put their lubed bullets in a pan in the oven at 200 degrees. That should be hot enough to melt off 95% of the lubes out there. You could put them in a metal colander or maybe on a screen of some sort. Just be aware if you get the oven to hot it might start smoking.

Sell'em. Start fresh. Removing every bit of lube will be a mess and near impossible. I'm assuming these are for 9mm? Getting leading? How are you expanding cases?

Something else may be at play. Could save you a hassle. PC isn't a cure all.

Dolomite_supafly, I knew I could count on you for your experience. No silencer, 5" STI Eagle. Just leading pretty bad after 200-300 rounds. I usually shoot jacketed but have all these Valiant 125's and just thought PC might be the way to go...

Thanks for all the responses
