Massive Buying Raises Gun Prices

All over the news, pick your source.

See, I really think my rights are safe for the foreseeable future, so I'm gonna wait until some of this hysteria settles down and until prices come back down a bit before I buy again.

I am in the market for a thick barrelled MKII or MKIII so if the reactionary buying doesn't affect those prices much I'll still look around.

Might buy ammunition I was planning to buy anyhow, but this whole gun seller mentality of raising prices every time the wind blows, in either direction, makes me a little loco.

I have serious doubts they will go after the weapons themselves, although bho does support banning all autoloaders...

They will go after the ammo... just my opinion...

If you are looking for a MKII the prices have been heading north for a couple of years now. People generally don't like the additional features of the MK III if they can get the previous generation.

Good bull barrel MKII was about $250 about 2 years ago...last month before the election crazyness they were running about $300-$350. Now they are $375 or so. Add some for the SS versions.

The 'transition team' has already been to batf, apparently they want to 'strengthen' the background check requirements. Expansion of prohibited persons categories by executive order? Misdemeanors and traffic violations used to deny transfers? I don't know, but I know better than to say it'll never happen.

Several key positions have been filled with not just democrats, but rabidly anti-gun democrats - even replacing a pro-gun democrat because he is pro-gun.

The BS about getting rid of 'assault weapons', child-proofing and so forth was moved from one part of the transition website to another, but wasn't changed. Insiders say he's still looking for a federal ban on CCW.

I've heard the exact same phrase about how he'll be dealing with "more pressing issues" so many times I've begun to believe the anti's are deliberately trying to get that idea established.

IMHO he'll try to get rid of guns, either through bans or taxation, quickly. Besides lets think about it people "more pressing isues" they can do more than one thing at a time. Get eveyones attenion on something else, like the economy, and then slide a AWB in through the back door.

I believe it will come down to taxes on all firearms and ammo related items. Think 100% to 300% taxes.

Remember, only the House can implement taxation - I'm still convinced congress recalls what happened in 1996 (following the AWB). BHO can't do it on his own and I doubt he has the votes to do it via congress...

How about an executive order 'finding' that semi-autos are not 'suitable for sporting purposes', and an order from BATF to halt sales? Heller was in the courts for what, 5 years? By the time it could be challenged at the Supreme Court level, it'd be "game over".

That one could def have legs, though I'm not up to speed on the BATFE's wording. There has to be something in their guidelines that allows him to twist the wording to that - surely someone here knows more than I do regarding this.

RE: Heller, don't think this would be the same - this would not be something a lower court could decide and would likely be presented to the SCOTUS for review (they'd decide whether or not to hear it, of course) very quickly. It certainly didn't take the SCOTUS five years to smack Truman (less than a year, if memory serves - the SCOTUS typically takes presidential execution of unconstitutional law pretty seriously). That being said, there's NO guarantee that even this court would reverse BHO's EO if he made one..

what are current taxes on ammunition.

For example if 1000 rounds of 7.62X39 is 210 bucks, what would it cost with a 300% tax increase?

Depends - is that 300% relative to the current tax or 300% to the overall cost?

Regardless, remember that BHO can't levy taxes by himself - it has to come from the HoR...

even if BO could raise taxes he cannot raise retail prices (pre tax)

What exactly is the amount of tax on 1000 rounds of X39 ammo that out the door is 210 bucks before sales tax?

I have no clue what the tax rate is on the manufacterer of ammo.

I believe there's already a tax in place on all ammunition that's added into the price we pay, pre-sales tax. That's what I was asking about above..

At this point, the biggest thing that concerns me is the power of the executive orders Obama is obviously planning on... He already has a laundry list of items supposeldy "addressing" the economy and situation we find ourselves in now - how hard would it be to slip in something about using the increased sale of firearms and ammunition to help bolster the tax income of the government (especially given how much money the government is giving out recently)?

Of course, this all ignores the fact that the President should not (and technically cannot) be addressing things like that, and that executive orders were never really meant for those capacities (but given that they are not defined in the Constitution or anywhere else, they exist in something of a vacuum), but something tells me Obama will not let those little matters trouble him.

I will be very surprised if something firearms-related does not come down from his administration by 20FEB09 - be it an increase in taxation, a ban on imported parts/ammunition, a ban on semiautomatics, a ban / national regulation on concealed carry... whatever. 'Course, I will also be very happy to be wrong.
