It was snowing pick n pluck at my residence a few minutes ago, I shamefully vacuumed up my tantrum and now I feel slightly dumb for not having it professionally cut, aswell as having just begged the manufacturer to let me have a do over..

I only tried it once and screwed up pretty bad as well.

I read later that using a hot knife makes it much easier.

you can use a razor/exacto or a hot wire or a number of other things on it.   Its not too bad to just trace and cut a chunk of solid foam.  The pre-cut stuff is a nightmare.    Trying to cut to a specific depth is very challenging, its easier to buy layers and cut all the way thru one layer and glue the other layer behind that.

If you put the foam in a freezer for a couple of hours or so it's a tad bit easier to cut with a very sharp knife. I've used a serrated edge on some pieces where short cuts were involved. The bottom line is pre plan, pre measure and work slowly but surely on each piece.

I also have always wanted a good gun case, but could never get the pick and pluck to work for me.  I ordered a new case with custom cut foam insert after seeing the vendor at the NRA show in Nashville.  Something like $100 for the case and the foam.  Paid a little extra for a "do over" option in case it didn't turn out right, but it was right the first time.  It was just a hair tight around the grip on the 686 and the Crimson Trace grip on the 642 so I used a Dremel tool to take off just a little bit of foam.  I used their software and it already had a couple of my guns set up in the program (642 and G19).  For the others I took photos and digitized them in the software (traced around the gun to scale).  It is an awesome case.  Hopefully this link will get you there and the software they use is "my case builder".  I've included a couple of photos of the case, and maybe one of my dog slipped in there too :).  Best wishes, B
