50 House Republicans Pledge To Elect GOP Speaker

ASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- All 50 Republicans in the Tennessee House of Representatives have signed a pledge to elect a slate of GOP leaders when the legislative session convenes in January.

The letter released Tuesday signals a likely end to Democratic House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh's record 18-year hold on the top post in the House.

Naifeh had often been able to persuade a handful of Republicans to vote for him when Democrats held a majority.

Republicans won a one-vote advantage in the General Assembly's lower chamber in last week's election.

The letter does not specify a preference for which Republicans should lead the House.

But Rep. Jason Mumpower, the House minority leader from Bristol, has said he expects to be elected speaker when the 106th General Assembly convenes in January.

The Republican lawmakers also appeared to reject a power-sharing agreement by pledging to elect a Republican as speaker pro tempore, the chamber's ceremonial No. 2 job.

That's great news!

And we all know if this does happen we might just be able to get some of those pesky bills regarding our ability to carry in restaurants and State parks passed!

That is GREAT news! But I am holding my breath to see it happen. Naifeh always has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Now's the time to get on the phones/e-mail and tell'em "If you leave naifeh as Speaker, we're putin your a**es out next election. No if and's or but's about it. We will work from the day he is put in till the day we're wavin at you leavin." :tough:

Nah, he is gone. They want "turnabout is fair play" after all his antics.

This development is huge. None of them are holding back and saying nothing. None of them are going only halfway and making verbal agreements, either public or private. All of them have signed their name on the letter:

Having said that, and having watched Naifeh, I agree that we can only believe it when we see it.

And when we see it, we shall indeed celebrate.

A GOOD SPEAKER of the HOUSE!

BRISTOL, Tenn. – State Rep. Jason Mumpower, R-Bristol, will likely replace Democratic House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh in January, snapping a record 18-year hold on the top post in the House.

Mumpower is good people. He carries an "A" tadams rating. :)

If we are lucky, maybe Bredensen will be offered a position in Washington!

I don't think he will like a total republican legislature.

What is Jason Mumpower's voting record and where does he stand on things?

I hope this happens.

I believe he is pro-gun. Don't know his record.

He represents the values of this area. (conservative).

I sure hope this happens. It would be nice if this restaurant and parks thing finally gets changed.

Thanks for posting that Crimson. I haven't had the time to look it up today. Look over the whole rap sheet, guys. He's the real deal.

Just in general, Jason is a very humble man and is always genuine and happy to hear what his constituents have to say. He is pro small business and will do anything he can to help the small business man.

I know of he and his wife through my association with them in the Real Estate world. He has really taken some of the needs of the North East TN Association of Realtors to heart and fought for them personally.

I feel, more so than any other, that he would be the man for the job and his influence would prove very positive.

BTW, here's where Jason Mumpower stands on gun rights: http://www.votesmart.org/npat.php?can_id=12093#826

  • Ease state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
  • Repeal state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms by law-abiding citizens.
  • Favor allowing citizens to carry concealed firearms.

Sounds good to me!

I love politics. An anonymous tip led to the investigation. "Teacher!" So he collects comics, sounds American.

Hard to say what Bredesen will do as Naifeh has kept new legislation away from him, but I believe Bredesen is more on 'our side' than Naifeh...

Yeah, I'd be surprised if he vetoed either the restaurant carry or the parks carry bills.
