Snake ID

So I was out working today, crossed a bridge over a little stream, took a double take and backed up to find this guy. I try not to be like so many and "know" what every snake in the world is, or else I would show my ignorance on the issue.

So what is it?

So, converting to a .gif reduced the resolution. Will try again tomorrow (well, it is 1:37 AM so later today perhaps?).

I generally like to play. ;)

Even with the low rez, I seem to see fairly distinct banding, so if it's indeed a "water snake" , my bet is the relatively common Northern Water Snake. Shading/banding can be distinct or more subdued, and vary in exact color.

Then again, most every snake will get in the water once in a while depending on circumstances, so fact you saw it in the rivulet isn't necessarily conclusive or anything. Maybe higher rez rendition will reveal more.

With the resolution being what it is, I'd agree that it's a Midland Water Snake. Nice fat healthy one too, looks like it's got a meal in there by the way it's moving.

It is in the water therefore it is a Water Moccasin.  Impossible to escape from and the bite will kill in seconds.

Harmless.. :)

Probably but this answer could also pertain to someone like EssOnes reply as it being a Hoversnake..........  If someone is deathly afraid of a snake it is not harmless. It will very possibly cause harm to the person trying to put as much distance as possible between the snake and themselves. I had a good friend that would kill you if you threw a toy rubber snake on him. He was deathly afraid of them. It took 4 of us to pull him off a guy that threw a toy rubber snake on his shoulder. He had the guy by the throat and on the ground and I didn't think we were going to get him off before he killed the guy. We did but just barely.........

Maybe so But our friend Carl was about 40 when we had to drag him off that guy the put that fake one on his shoulder. We all knew he was deathly afraid of them and this guy also knew it but was not a friend and he did it as a joke but it was not to funny when he was gasping for air after we finally go Carl off of him. I have known several people both woman and men that have hurt themselves trying to get away from totally harmless snakes. The only snake that bothered me in my life is the what the natives called the 2 Step located in Vietnam. If you got bit by one you were lucky if you made it 2 steps before you were dead. The Black Mambo didn't bother me but the 2 Steps did..............jmho

I've been shot at, come under mortar fire, driven down roads with IED's , and have been audited by the IRS...but when I see a snake, I jump on top of something or run like a complete bitch because shooting them never seems to be an option.  I'm confident in my manhood and if it wasn't for them eating disease carrying rodents, I'd want all snakes eradicated.
