I know there is no Gun Registry in TN but Can someone tell me how a 4473 isnt a gun registry? If they find a gun at a crime scene can they not trace i back to the origional purchaser?

I just stopped in on this thread because I was wondering how it ended up being 3 pages long, already.

1. Gun's aren't registered

2. Closed shop means paperwork is given to the BATFE

I lost count... what number is that?

I understand an FFL has to turn over his records if going out of business, but it was my understanding that an FFL doesn't have to keep his records but for so long. After a certain amount of time can he not destroy those records? Maybe I just thought I heard that.

They can't trace it back to the orginal purchaser, that is who they can start with. But with no paperwork required for private sales, who knows or can say how many times or to whom a weapon was sold after that?

A couple of years ago the invesitgator from the sheriff's dept called me about a handgun I purchased at Wal-Mart about 20 years ago. I actually happened to remember who I sold it to and told him, but who knows where it went from there over that long?

For what its worth- When I got my carry permit in May of 1995 it was required to register the serial # on the permit card.

If any one else remembers, the cards were huge and almost didn't fit in your wallet! Back then I think it was done on purpose.

Are you talking about when the permits were issued by the sheriff?

I got mine in Nashville back then.

It isn't necessary anymore.

Tennessee does not track or regulate the private transactions of firearms between two persons. just be damn sure the person who is getting the weapon (this goes for everyone) is not chester the molester.
