Lets get started on SBS Project

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As I said in an earlier post I have an 870 Wingmaster I got after my grandfather died. I was saving it for a parts gun until I recently read up on how easy it is to Build a SBS from an existing shotgun using a Form 1.

I put some pics of it below, But first I have a few question's.

1: I was looking over the Form 1 and it asks for the SN if its an existing gun. Does this mean I don't have to engrave anything additional on the receiver? If I don't I can start refinishing right away, while waiting for the Tax Stamp.

2: How Durable is Dura-Cote? I am trying to keep this one cheap. By having a buddy of mine at work bead blast the reciever and other external parts. Then I was going to coat it myself. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated.

3: Since I cant cut and finish a barrel until the Stamp comes in, will the barrel match if I coat it after the reciever using the same can of paint?

After thought... On an AR SBR I have seen where people keep the barreled upper at a friends house to keep it legal, Could I get a barrel take it to work and cut it down and finish it there and have my trusted buddy take it home with him and hold it until the Stamp comes back? So the barrel and reciever are never in the house together?

It will take a while to finish it as it has a very thick shotty coat of spray paint on it.

Pics Below:

You need to rethink your protocol for this project and make sure you're staying legal and make sure you're not posting something on the Internet that may come back and bite you in the ass later. Especially given the information that you provided in THIS THREAD where you hypothetically pose the question as if a person was in possession of the bbl.

We frown heavily on discussing illegal activities here. But ultimately it's going to be between you and the nice BATFE agent.

The SN you provide is the SN on the receiver. You will need to have your name and city engraved or stamped on the receiver as you are the manufacturer of the SBS.

Thermally cured coatings work far better than air cured coatings. For curing the finish you can use a baking tray for the large parts (use one that's clean and that you won't use for anything else) and use chain link fence ties for the small parts. Hang the small parts from the baking racks with the ties. Works like a charm.

It will be close, but not exact. If you want it to match you'll need to coat them at the same time.

You might want to go delete/edit your "hypothetical" thread... as well as the second mention... and leave it at that. Having read the initial two posts, and now this one, the progression of the story line smells like :hat:.

Authority figures, including those of the BATFE, have been known to peruse this site in the past. You're just painting yourself as suspicious, and it might haunt you later.

I apologize and I get the picture... I am trying to do something completely legal. let me reiterate there is currently NO BARREL in existence for this gun please note the absence of a barrel from the pics. Can we move on to my original questions please.

Read my original post in this thread.

As for the barrel, don't even think about getting one until the stamp comes back "approved."

OK with that said can anybody recommend someplace I can get the stamping done in NE TN? Laser engraving wont do as I am going to coat it.

For a moment I thought Kwik had resurfaced....
