Dressing up the J-Frame

I'll admit, I'm a j-frame fan. I love the simplicity and reliability. After several thousand rounds of practice, i feel confident in handling and firing this platform. But--i just fell in love again this weekend....

I have a 637 (chief special) that i picked up off a fellow member a this winter. Since the hammer is exposed, i carry this one IWB/OWB most of the time. Given the method of carry, i figured i could get away with something larger than the factory boot grip. I ordered these Hogue Monogrips last week and i couldn't be happier. Accuracy improved drastically and i didn't give up much--if anything--in concealability.

In addition to that, i think it looks much better (in my opinion)

So i say all that to say this; if you've considered aftermarket grips for your j-frame--do it!

I have the exact same grips on my 642. However, I still prefer the Uncle Mikes Combat Grips that are rubber and about the same dimensions.

I prefer a larger grip on mine as well, more control and accuracy. That is a fine lookin piece Sir!

I like the looks of those grips too.

I just picked ups j frame in .32 h&r magnum. I am aware that .32H&R is an almost obsolete calibre, but since this will be an occasional carry gun for me. I figure I can get enough ammo now to do me well into the future

I had put redwood grips on three of my J-Frames. Dropped two of them when drawing with wet hands and went back to Hogue rubber grips. A revolver is a tool and needs to be totally utilitarian.

An Airweight is more pleasant to shoot with a larger more hand filling set of grips on it. If it's purpose in being a belt gun this is a great approach. If it's intended to be a coat pocket gun then the improvement in shoot ability is a win to.

I agree and find these the very best for an all around j frame: AA313E1C-4F47-41E6-AB5A-12100C12EDDA-615

I agree, Patton.  I love mine - minus the internal lock that I wish wasn't there...

I actually was referring to the combat grips. They are actually hard to come by unless you buy them from S&W direct.

Oh, gotcha.  Are those the old Uncle Mike grips?

I put a set of Pachmayr grips on mine.  As you can see from the pics of the 642 lying on top of my GP100 - first with the vestigial things that the factory passes off as 'grips' and then with the Pachmayr grips, they only increase the length of the grip a little but the width and breadth is a little more.  Control, accuracy and felt recoil are greatly improved with the Pachmayr grips but it still carries just as well in the pockets of most of my pants.  In fact, in pants with particularly large pockets, even though I use a pocket holster, the gun would sometimes move around and get in a weird position.  The slightly larger Pachmayr grips keep it upright and in place.

They don't look nearly as good as the OP's wood grips, though.

See, my thinking runs just the opposite.  For the most part, I see revolvers as objects that are interesting to look at and that can be (with even a few, minor changes) things of beauty which are also useful tools..  Semi-autos, on the other hand, while they are good tools to have and even have some advantages, have about as much 'soul' as a ball peen hammer (generally speaking.)  That said, when talking about a frequently carried revolver if the aesthetic improvements make it more difficult to use/hold on to then, yep, something has to go.
