Broken Sight Help!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So last night in an non-drunken stupor,I decided to swap the sights from my XD,and my Sig.

All was going according to plan,no problems whatsoever.

I easily removed all three sights, except for the front XD sight, which was a wee wittle bit tight.

The wooden dowel I was using actually split in two, forcing me to get out a pin punch.

So after tapping it a couple times,I finally felt it go.

"hum, that was easy!" I said......untill I removed the cloth covering my slide!

The durn thing had snapped.

Now I'm stuck with just the part that recesses into the dovetail with little to no idea on how to remove this stubbornly stuck piece of :dunno: (I just wanted to use the new Smile:))

Any ideas on removal?

And just in case anybody is wondering,My Sig now has one factory front sight, and one Trijicon night sight

Should have been using one of the patented Craftsman/CCA sight tools. :dunno:

Use a flat end punch to drive it out of the dovetail. Seat the punch firmly against the broken piece, and drive it out with a small hammer or mallet. Should have enough of a surface on the broken piece to effectively push it out. If you can't make any headway, just take it to a shop and their 'smith should be able to remove it with little problem.

Never seen one break like that, but I've also always used a sight pusher (vs punches) and gone slowly to make sure it stayed flat and flush to the slide, without binding.

Sorry for your bad luck.

Keep it that way and tell people it was modified by the ASP company for close up gunfights. I heard they were modding XDs instead of model 39s now. :dunno:

Honestly, I've never seen a sight removed from a XD without breaking it. They wedge those things in there so tight from the factory its next to impossible to remove them otherwise.

Truth!

You might get lucky with an MGW sight pusher and get the factory sight out without breaking it, but it's a huge might.

Very nice. Classic example there.

They were not factory sights. They were Trijicon night sights.

I have only heard of horror stories of factory sights, but have always heard of aftermarkets slipping in/out with little to no fuss

I broke a Trijicon sight off at the base like that on my SIG 229 once. Feces occurs.

Oh really!

I think I will stay away from Trijicon in the future!

I would. The radiation given off by their tritium will cause your babies to have two heads and tentacles.
