a worthwhile article about IDPA/IPSC/USPSA

It's a little trouble to get to, but worth the effort, IMO. Duane Thomas wrote this article in the November edition of the Blue Press (Dillon's monthly catalog/magazine). I'm not trying to revive the recent dead-horse thread about how IDPA can get you killed, but this article addresses some of the issues in that thread. When he refers to frequent participation in combat pistol matches as "training," I cringed a little. However, I don' think Thomas meant that competition should substitute for actual training; I think he meant for it to maintain skills and techniques learned in training. Just my $.02.

I thought it was a pretty good article. I have always wondered how being able to draw from concealment, engage multiple targets quickly and accurately while moving or using cover then changing magazines and quickly clearing weapon problems all while under the pressure of the clock and scrutiny of my peers is a bad thing. I have no illusion that this is combat training but my alternative is to stand and shoot targets at a range at my leisure. I am also very sure of the fact that I would be much more carefull and cautious if the threat of people shooting back were real. I doubt many of us who enjoy the shooting sports would be "running and gunning" in a real life situation.

No matter what somebody does, and no matter how useful it seems, there's always somebody else who thinks it's stupid.

Duane Thomas is one of the few good gun writers out there. He is a regular on the Brian Enos forum.I remember about 14 or 15 years ago he wrote a very good article about the dangers of letting others know what your carry weapon is.To this day if somebody asks what I carry I reply a gold plated Deagle or a RG revolver or some such.

Could you summarize the logic of his stance on that?

(Googled but didn't come up with it)...
