i purchased a complete 6.8 upper for my AR today. unfortunately i bought an A2 with the fixed carry handle. i wasn't thinking about it when i bought it (there was too much going on around me). but on the way home i thought about the eotech sight i had been waiting to put on something for the longest and realized that i should have bought the flat top. i purchased the upper at the nashville FG today. i am going to go back up there tomorrow and talk to the seller and ask if they could do a swap with me for a flat top. has anyone "chopped off" their carry handle and added a weaver rail? i've seen some pics of some A2 carry handles chopped on the internet, leaving the BUIS, but they also have a weaver/ picatinny rail?

There are mounts that allow you to attach optics to the top of the carry handle. Never tried one, but they seem like they would put the optic a little too high. But it might be worth looking into.

I've seen a guy shooting an AR with an optic on top of the carry handle. Looked awkward to me.

I'm pretty sure you can have a fixed-handle upper modified into a flattop, but I have no clue how much it might cost you. Hopefully you'll be able to pull off the swap with the seller...

seen a couple optic mounts for the carry handle and they do look high, not to mention untacti-cool.

search "How-to Chop your Carry Handle into a BUIS" in google. are those A2's with with fixed handle and sights or A3 with the removable carry handle/rearsight?

Those are A3's with the removable carry handle chopped down to make a LMT-style rear BUIS.

joe to the rescue once again

I have a xm-15 with A2 with an optic on it. It does kinda look untacticool and is a bitch to zero, but it can be done as long as your optic has A LOT of adjustment to it. The biggest problem is finding a case that it sits in right

Your eotech can be mounted down farther on the forend grip.

Might look kind of odd down there, but some tactical courses often recomend it down there.

I thought it was stange at first, but tried out a buddies AR that was rigged that way in it made since.

I used to have an A1 carry handle with a short 4x scope mounted on it, it was a bit top heavy, but it zero'd right in for me and shot great. Yeah, I wouldn't even consider chopping down a A2.....just spend the $80 or $90 bucks to buy an A3 upper and swap it out.......then you can sell the A2 and recoup some of the cost or save it for a rainy day when you bust that EOTech

i'll probably just buy the a3 upper and swap it out.
