Has a small issue yesterday in Cookville!

I had to take my Skeeter Bass Boat in for repairs and after dropping it off before hitting the interstate to come home I stopped at a quick stop market to get a bottle of water and my buddy with me a Pepsi. When I came out of the store I noticed that 5 young black youths had kinda surrounded my jeep and buddy inside and of course I had Kasey along. they were poking fun at her and yelling at her and she was barking back at them. When I approached my Jeep 3 of the young men stepped between me and my jeep and were about 10 feet away. I ask them politely to let me pass and one of them said "what you gonna do if we don't"? I saw one of them slip his hand in his pocket. I always wear a cover shirt with only one button closed. I unbuttoned it and opened it up just enough for them to see it and I eased my hand around my model 85 and pulled the hammer back but never removed it from holster. I asked again to back off and let me in my jeep. When the one up front saw I was ready to do what ever it took to get in my jeep they all moved back and began to walk away after they huddled up for a few seconds. I waited till they were a safe distance before moving towards my Jeep. That was were it all ended and I would like to hear thoughts and opinions on if my actions were the right ones? I don't think any of them were much over 14 years old.............................. :shrug: :shrug:

IMHO you did good, you kept a situation from escalating and got home safe. You should have called 911 and reported the incident though. Just to cover you rear.

I think you were spot on. A show of force is all it takes most of the time. I've often said if I ever had to use my gun it would probablely be a 14 year old punk trying to prove himself. And living near Mempho the odds are better than even that's what will happen.

Well that's a little out of place around here. Glad it didn't get any more serious. I'm betting they were traveling and came from off the interstate. Next time call the police and report them. If they pull them over I'm betting there will be other reasons inside the vehicle to arrest them on.

Sounds like Cookeville has really gone to crap since I left in '08. It was just an oasis in an area surrounded by rampant meth and pull abuse then. You went home safe and didn't shoot anyone, sounds like you handled it well.

Well, I thought about calling the police but it appeared they were all walking and had no vehicle to get into. I watched the boy with his hand in his pocket and it appeared he wrapped his hand around a knife and not a firearm. Had I seen a firearm come out he would have got shot first. By the time police would have arrived and filed a report and then actually went looking for them they would have been long gone. If it had escalated farther I would have had no choice. All I wanted to do after they moved on was get on my way home.

Glad things didn't turn out worse for you. I agree with others to have called the police to be on record first as the victim and not the perp.

The only thing I would disagree with is precocking the hammer while in the holster. In "single action" mode all it takes is a slight bump on the trigger and you're likely going to be the one needing emergency help.

Monkey and I have been here for 6 months now after fleeing Nashville. I agree with him, it sounds very out of place for the area. We moved close to Cookeville, but outside of the city by about 30 minutes. I don't mean this to sound bad but I don't think I have even seen 5 black people since I moved here. It's weird to me because I grew up in a high school was 85% black and I was the minority. I've seen one guy who's a concern since I've been here but he's just a strung out white kid. Quite honestly I've never felt safer. No contributor "sales persons", no one approaching me for money or anything.

As for me, I would have called the police. They have a huge concentration of officers here. Sheriffs, city police and THP. I've never drove so slow in my life. But reading this makes me thankful for my upcoming HCP class.

All good moves except for not calling the police to report it<--- This part of the scenario is just as important as having a firearm on you for protection..Protect yourself on the legal side the next time and report it..:)

Awareness and Preparedness is a good combo.  End result nobody hurt and no shots fired, but always call the police.  That might increase patrols in the area and save someone else.

There is no place immune from this kind of stuff, even small, out of the way towns. It's just a part of life nowadays and the reason we all carry. Of course some areas are more prone to this kind of event.

Glad it worked out. Also a reminder of how little it would have helped if you'd carried that day, but left it in the console of the vehicle and couldn't get to it.

Agreed with AK47 part, just pure ignorance. But I am mind blown at this statement.

"By the time you call police and police get there, the crime had been done," Fisher said. "I'm right there. It's my car. I can go defuse the situation faster."

I am aware that it might not be convenient to have to wait 3-58 minutes depending on response time. But no matter where you are, you should always call 911. If for nothing more than to CYA!

Gosh, guess I need t answer a few things here. First is I never put my gun in m console and glad I didn't cause my friend that was in my Jeep with Kasey may not have been as in control as I was. He had locked all the doors when they first began poking jokes at Kasey being so fat and she was barking at them. Second is I will definitely call the police if I am ever in another situation like this again. It was not all that serious and once they realized I was armed the situation was defused and in all honesty I would have hated to see a bunch of police roll in on these kids and make things escalate a lot more and maybe a LEO get excited and shoot a kid. Some one ask where it was. It was a fast stop or quick stop market between Interstate Drive and I-40. I just dropped my boat off on Interstate Drive and was heading back home. As far as my cocking my model 85 in my holster. The safety was on and hammer was in the de-cock position which allows the 85 hammer to be cocked while on safety. Gotta love a quality Bersa. The new Bersa's don't offer that option. That is why I wanted the model 85 so bad and was able to get one a year ago. Plus it also offers and has the 15 round capacity with 1 in the tube and 14 in the magazine. I promise I will call the police next time..................... :up: :up: I am not familiar with Cookville other than when I take my boat up there for service so don't know what the ratio is on Black and White and don't really care. I do know that when I go and pick my boat back up I won't make any stops on the way back home....... :up:

I have been working with juveniles a long time and have seen more the 'pack' mentality and I am beginning to come to the theory that some youngsters believe, if they get shot, it's part of the culture and afterwards, TV/Media/Al Sharpton will make a marytr of their pathetic life.  

 

Having been through Cookville many times, I would suspect this encounter there as I would in Memphis.

Sorry, I thought you meant a Taurus model 85 revolver. So you can see my concern of cocking the hammer on a double action revolver while it was in the holster.

Honestly didn't mean anything by what I said. My friend portfolio is very deversified. I just pointed it out because the scales here are very uneven. So it was shocking to picture a group that's all. But regardless of skin color, you, your friend and your pup didn't deserve what you dealt with. Especially your pup, no girl likes to be told she's fat. Glad you're all ok.

I don't believe that it goes that deep. These young people simply have no values and don't care about anything or anyone regardless of ethnicity.
